CHAMPAIGN, Ill. >> The University of Michigan women’s basketball team trailed by six points with less than four minutes to play Sunday.

Then suddenly, the Wolverines went on a 17-0 run to take the lead and defeat Illinois, 78-69.

The victory was the 20th of the season for Michigan, which finishes the regular season 20-9 and 11-7 in the Big Ten and now will resume action this week in the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Indianapolis.

UM was down 65-59 with 3:41 to play when their game-winning run began with freshman Mila Holloway hit a jumper, followed by a three-point play on a layup and free throw, then drilled a 3-points to give Michigan a 67-65 lead with 2:02 to play.

The run continued with a 3-pointer by Syla Swords, four free throws by Olivia Hobbs and Holloway, and two free throws by Jordan Hobbs with 34 seconds remaining.

“I thought we were making some shots and that allowed us to pick up full court defensively, which sped them up a little bit,” UM coach Kim Barnes Arico said of the final three minutes.

“We hadn’t been able to do that all game long to that point. Our shotmaking really allowed us to get up and pressure them in the full court. I thought we took them out of rhythm when we were able to do that down the stretch.”

Holloway led four Wolverines in double figures with 19 points.

“She is a baby. To be in the position she is as a freshman, running the point guard position, is a challenge,” Barnes Arico said.

“She steps up to that challenge every single day. I know we have two high school All-Americans in Syla and Olivia, and they are tremendous for us.

“But Mila Holloway is pretty special in her own right.

“She was amazing tonight on both ends.”

Olson finished with 18 points, Hobbs had 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Greta Kampschroeder scored 10 points, all in the first half.

Kendall Bostic led Illinois (21-8, 11-7) with game-highs in points (24) and rebounds (12).
