U.S. routs Switzerland 7-2 in world junior quarterfinal
OTTAWA, Ontario >> Boston College teammates James Hagens and Ryan Leonard each scored twice and the defending champion United States routed Switzerland 7-2 on Thursday in the world junior quarterfinals.
Boston University’s Brandon Svoboda, Notre Dame’s Danny Nelson and Denver’s Zeev Buium also scored.
Group A champion Americans will face Czechia on Saturday. Group B winner Sweden will play Finland in the other semifinal.
Bailey Zappe to start Browns’ season finale
BEREA, Ohio >> Bailey Zappe will be quarterback No. 4 and No. 40 for the Browns.
He was selected by coach Kevin Stefanski to start Saturday’s season finale at Baltimore, making him the fourth quarterback to start this season and the 40th since Cleveland returned to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999.
Jets interview Rivera for head coaching job, ESPN’s Riddick for GM vacancy

Alabama QB Milroe, LB Campbell declare for NFL draft after bowl loss
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. >> Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe and linebacker Jihaad Campbell are entering the NFL draft.
Milroe and Campbell announced decisions to skip their final seasons Thursday on social media, two days after the Crimson Tide fell to Michigan 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
Wild captain Spurgeon out 2-3 weeks after getting injured on slew-foot
WASHINGTON >> Minnesota Wild captain Jared Spurgeon is expected to miss two to three weeks with an apparent right leg injury after getting slew-footed earlier this week by Nashville’s Zachary L’Heureux, who was suspended three games for his actions.
Spurgeon’s right leg bent awkwardly when he crashed into the boards after having his skates taken out from under him and shoulders pushed backward by L’Heureux early in the second period on Tuesday.
New Mexico State parts with AD Moccia in wake of report on sex abuse
New Mexico State is moving on from athletic director Mario Moccia in the wake of an investigation that criticized the school’s handling of the sexual abuse scandal that temporarily shut down the Aggies men’s basketball program.
Valerio Ferme, who took over as university president to start the year, announced Moccia’s dismissal Thursday and that Amber Burdge, NMSU’s deputy athletic director for strategic initiatives and leadership, would be acting athletic director.
French skier Sarrazin out of intensive care after surgery
BORMIO, Italy >> French skier Cyprien Sarrazin was out of intensive care after sustaining a head injury in a crash last week.
Sarrazin underwent surgery for a bleed near the brain after crashing on Friday during preparations for the World Cup downhill in Bormio, Italy.
