The Monterey City Council will hear recommendations from the Planning Commission at this week’s meeting and go over the council’s study session notes, where council members shared their priorities for the next year.

The Council will receive a recommendation from the Planning Commission to permit bicycle and some e-bike rentals on Cannery Row.

The proposed amendment would expand the Cannery Row and Community Commercial zoning districts to include the use of bicycles and equipment rentals, and according to city staff would not disrupt traffic patterns or cause an influx of people to visit the area.

“The Bicycle/Equipment Rentals use would be limited in scope, in that it would be focused entirely on bicycles and electric bicycles, including the use of associated equipment, such as helmets and gloves, along with repair and maintenance of the rental fleet,” Tuesday’s agenda reads.

If passed, the amendment would not allow scooter or quadricycle rentals. Tuesday will be the first reading, giving council members the opportunity to make any changes. The next step will be to bring the item back in a future council meeting.

The city hosted a staff work program Jan. 21, discussing short and long-term policies, programs and projects that are not part of the city’s “routine service delivery.” During the meeting, council members highlighted wanting to hold town halls to discuss renewing the Measures P & S sales tax, tax, ensuring city readiness for natural disasters and addressing homelessness to name a few.

City staff will go over the priorities and shortcomings that council members mentioned during the study session and present them to the public in what they aim to be an organized way.

The Monterey City Council will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Monterey City Hall, 580 Pacific St. The meeting will be streamed online and can be watched via Zoom at https://monterey-org.zoomgov.com/j/1607729333.
