BROOMFIELD >> Two things are a bit clearer after Peak to Peak beat Prospect Ridge 66-61 in their top-10 boys basketball matchup Friday.

The Pumas look to be more than just a program on the rise, for one.

Behind a core that got it to the Sweet 16 the past two seasons, Class 4A No. 2 Peak to Peak was in control for most of its five-point win at No. 6 PRA.

Its high-efficient offense and defense stood up in what will likely be the toughest environment it’ll encounter this winter. As players celebrated afterward, they reaffirmed that the Pumas’ championship window is now.

“We come together in those moments,” said Peak to Peak junior Tysen Burton, who had a game-high 22 points. “We like big crowds, and we like having a lot of adversity.”

Adversity — the Miners gave it to them.

Refusing to go away, PRA trailed by as many as 17 in the second half and 14 in the fourth quarter before a frantic comeback made way for a tight finish.

The Miners are more than just a feel-good story, PRA senior Travis Agbosse promised.

“Before the season nobody had us close to the top 10,” said Agbosse, who has helped lead the Miners to a high 4A rank in their first season since moving up from 3A. “We’re ready for the moment.”

A wild atmosphere inside the gym at PRA — where the school said it set its attendance record — was treated to a boys’ game befitting it.

The Pumas (14-1, 3-0 4A/3A Metro League) overcame an early 10-0 run by the Miners (10-4, 2-1), seizing control by the midway point of the second quarter.

Their lead grew to 53-36 in the third. They were getting exactly what they wanted: Burton driving, Dane Hirt hitting timely 3s and the 6-foot-7 Elijah Eschmeyer protecting the rim.

Peak to Peak’s lead was 61-48 with 5:13 remaining in regulation and was 63-52 with 3:02 left.

Then, madness.

In a span of 1 minute and 20 seconds of game time, PRA scored nine straight points to get within a bucket of the lead. With 1:13 to go, Agbosse barreled down the lane and finished through contact to make it 63-61.

The Pumas stopped the bleeding with a quick timeout, then held on thanks to a strong finish. Hirt came up with a pair of steals in the last minute and Burton’s lay-in with 25 seconds remaining all but sealed things.

Burton’s 22 points tied his career high. Nyima Chonden added 14 points and Hirt had four 3s and 13 of his own as Peak to Peak beat PRA for a third straight year.

The Pumas have now won four straight since falling at 5A No. 30 Thornton on Jan. 18 in their only loss of the season.

Agbosse finished with 17 points in the loss. It came a week after he scored a career-best 21 in a win over 4A No. 29 The Academy.

Liam Schilling added eight of his 13 in the fourth for the Miners, who outscored Peak to Peak 19-10 in the final frame.

Before it, the Pumas won the girls’ game, 54-27 — also their third straight win in the rivalry.

Alexandra Eschmeyer, named a McDonald’s All-American on Monday, led the way. The 6-foot-5 Stanford commit scored all 28 of her points ahead of the fourth quarter to push the 4A No. 9 team’s win streak to four games.

Get this: Eschmeyer has outscored seven of the Pumas’ opponents this winter by herself, including each of the past four.

She is averaging 26 points this winter — the state’s fourth-most — and its eighth-most rebounds — with around 14 per night.

Her double-double streak is at 22 straight games, dating back to last February.

Oh, and for good measure, she won a game of knockout during halftime of the boys’ game, beating out eager fans that came down from the bleachers.

PRA (3-13, 0-4) got 25 of its 27 points in the loss from Amelia Waggoner and Kayah Robbins.

Both the Miners’ girls and boys are at Forge Christian on Tuesday.

Peak to Peak’s girls are home against St. Mary’s Academy on Tuesday. The boys host Denver Christian Thursday.
