Tampa Bay extended Major League Baseball’s best start in 20 years behind Jeffrey Springs’ seven innings of three-hit ball and Randy Arozarena’s four RBIs, routing Oakland on Saturday for an 8-0 record. Tampa Bay is the first big league team to open 8-0 since the 2003 Kansas City Royals won their first nine games. Isaac Paredes and Brandon Lowe had three RBIs each for the Rays.

Kodai Senga won his fantastic Citi Field debut, and the New York Mets got home runs from Pete Alonso and slumping Eduardo Escobar to beat Miami. With fans hanging ghost signs on an outfield railing to mark Senga’s strikeouts, the Japanese rookie with the disappearing “ghost forkball” fired six innings of three-hit ball. The only run he allowed came on a leadoff homer by Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the sixth.

Bryson Stott capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning with a winning single to lead Philadelphia over Cincinnati. Cincinnati’s bullpen wasted a tremendous effort from left-hander Nick Lodolo, who struck out a career-high 12 and tossed three-hit ball over seven shutout innings. He walked only two batters over 106 pitches and left with a 1-0 lead.

Cardinals 6, Brewers 0

Nolan Arenado hit his 300th career homer, Jordan Walker also went deep and St. Louis won at Milwaukee to end its four-game skid and snap the Brewers’ six-game winning streak.

Padres 4, Braves 1

Michael Wacha matched his career high with 10 strikeouts, Juan Soto homered and San Diego overcame a ninth-inning scare to beat Atlanta.

Royals 6, giants 5

Salvador Pérez hit a tying, three-run homer in the eighth inning and Nate Eaton scored on a wild pitch in the ninth as Kansas City rallied past San Francisco. Eaton pinch-ran for Vinnie Pasquantino, who led off the ninth with a double off Giants closer Camilo Doval. Eaton advanced to third on a ground out by Hunter Dozier and sprinted to the plate on a wild pitch by Doval, barely beating the tag by catcher Blake Sabol with a head-first slide.

Rafael Devers homered twice, including his fifth career grand slam, and drove in five runs to lead Boston over Detroit. Devers’ grand slam capped a six-run, second inning. Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer, doubled twice and scored three runs for Boston.

Yankees 4, orioles 1

Giancarlo Stanton homered to cap New York’s three-run fifth inning, and the Yankees went on to beat Baltimore. Anthony Volpe tripled for his first big league extra-base hit.

White Sox 11, Pirates 5

Yasmani Grandal, Luis Robert Jr., Oscar Colás had two hits and drove in two runs each to lead the Chicago White Sox past Pittsburgh. Tim Anderson, Andrew Benintendi and Andrew Vaughn also had two hits each for Chicago.

Cubs 10, rangers 3

Justin Steele pitched six effective innings and Patrick Wisdom homered to help the Chicago Cubs beat Texas. Trey Mancini had three of Chicago’s 14 hits in its third consecutive win.

Mariners 3, guardians 2

Eugenio Suárez drove in two runs, and Seattle got to Cal Quantrill early before handing Cleveland’s starter his first home loss since 2019 with a win over the Guardians. Suárez hit RBI singles in the first and second innings off Quantrill, who came in 14-0 in 34 regular-season starts at Progressive Field.

Twins 9, astros 6

Byron Buxton and Kyle Farmer hit three-run homers to power Minnesota past Houston. Christian Vázquez had two RBI singles, Trevor Larnach had two hits and an RBI and Joe Ryan recovered from Yordan Alvarez’s grand slam to win his second straight start.
