If you’re going to make one shot in a game, might as well make it a game-winner.
Sophomore Isaac Turner nailed a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired Tuesday night, giving host Archbishop Mitty a 56-54 win over Valley Christian in a West Catholic Athletic League opener.
“Every time we go hard in practice our coaches say, ‘You play hard and hustle, your shots are going to fall.’ And the shot fell at the right time,” said Turner, whose team is ranked No. 10 by the Bay Area News Group.
Turner’s shot provided an ending to a high-energy battle with multiple swings of momentum. Mitty’s pressure defense was a decisive factor at both the beginning and at the conclusion of the game.
The Monarchs forced six first-quarter turnovers and had a 15-7 lead shortly before the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was a totally different story. No. 16 Valley Christian hit its first five shots, made 9 of 14 in the quarter and blitzed Mitty to a 25-6 tune, taking a 34-21 lead at the break. The Warriors closed the half on a 14-0 run with Bellarmine transfer Brayden Harris scoring the final 11 points.
Valley was still up by 13 late in the third quarter before Mitty went on an 8-0 run to make it 43-38 heading to the fourth. Five of those points were scored by Grayson Jalal, who finished with a game-high 24 points.
No. 2 Salesian 64, No. 12 St. Mary’s-Berkeley 50 >> For the past 10 years, Salesian has dominated its league. The Pride usually breeze past their Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division opponents, boasting a 79-2 league record since the 2015-16 season.
But on Tuesday, Salesian was in a dogfight with a new-look St. Mary’s-Berkeley in front of a packed gym at home. In the end, Salesian’s defense stepped up big in the second half to seal the victory, its 18th in a row over the Panthers.
Junior guard Elias Obenyah led Salesian with 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.
No. 6 Moreau Catholic 82, Mission San Jose 40 >> Kellen Hampton exploded for 30 points as the Mariners (10-2, 3-0) dominated Mission San Jose at home in Mission Valley Athletic League play. Darsh Jayaram finished with 14 points to lead MSJ (9-6, 2-1).
No. 14 California 71, Alhambra 47 >> Brayde Kuykendall scored a team-high 13 points and Emeka Ifediora and Sib Sankar each had 12 to lead California (15-2) on the road. Torrance Avery, Jaimison Krause and Vincente Taylor each had 10 points for Alhambra (7-5).

No. 4 San Ramon Valley 79, Alameda 47 >> Ella Gunderson had 23 points, five rebounds and five assists in SRV’s blowout win over Alameda on the road. Junior Alyssa Rudd added 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Mia Borja had a team-high 11 points for Alameda (8-5).
No. 7 Piedmont 60, No. 17 California 55 >> Piedmont picked up another signature win, defeating California for the second time this season. Freshman Andrea Martin had a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds for visiting Piedmont. California guard Lauren Yee had a terrific shooting night as she scored 21 points and made five 3-pointers.
