A convicted shoplifter from Macomb County was shot and killed last week while reaching for a Faygo Redpop soda that authorities used to end a bank hostage standoff, according to mid-Michigan police.

Police identified the slain suspect as Quinton M. Allen, 31, of Detroit.

According to multiple news organizations, Allen entered the Mercantile Saginaw Virtual Branch and Lending Office in Saginaw Township Friday afternoon, although the facility had closed a half-hour earlier.

He asked a lone 40-year-old female employee cash a check, which turned out to be fraudulent, Michigan State Police Lt. Kim Vetter said.

The branch does not have cash on hand and requires customers to make appointments. Police did not say how he was able to enter the building after it had closed for the day.

Investigators said the employee told Allen she could not cash his check. He then attacked her and demanded money by using a sharp object as a weapon, WJRT-TV reported.

Officers from numerous area agencies responded to the bank in one of the township’s busiest commercial districts. They set up a perimeter and closed roughly a half-mile of a street for several hours Friday evening.

Police negotiated with Allen as he held the teller inside. During their negotiations, police said Allen asked for a Faygo Redpop soda.

MLive reported an MSP drone was flown into the building with a 24-ounce bottle of the red soda attached. With the beverage hanging in front of a window, Allen appeared, and a member of the MSP Emergency Services Team fired a single rifle shot from a position on the roof of the AutoZone Auto Parts store located across the street, Vetter said.

Police rushed in and ushered the employee outside, draping a blanket around her. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was discharged later that night.

Allen died from the gunshot wound, according to police.

The bank’s Facebook account posted Friday night that the location would be closed until further notice, with its website stating it remains closed as of Monday, June 30.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Allen was placed on two years of probation this past February after he was convicted of first-degree retail fraud. Macomb County Circuit Court records indicate he had pleaded guilty to stealing something from a Target store.

Judge Julie Gatti sentenced him to probation, with credit for time served, and ordered him to pay $357 in restitution to the business.

MDOC records also show Allen was put on probation out of Wayne County for a conviction of breaking and entering in 2024 and for a larceny conviction in Oakland County in 2022.
