A basketball tournament at Hillcrest High School turned deadly Saturday after an attending parent was shot and killed in a parking lot outside the school in Country Club Hills.
Multiple armed offenders ambushed Shamaree Siller, 41, from Chicago in the school’s back parking lot shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday during the tournament, Country Club Hills police said. Siller was accompanied by his juvenile son of “a neighboring community,” according to a Bremen High School District 228 news release.“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, loved ones, and all those affected by this heartbreaking event,” district administration said in the release, referring other questions to Country Club Hills police.
Police said the offenders waited for the victim in a black Infiniti Q50 and, when he and his son left the school, blocked the path to his vehicle. The offenders then got out of their vehicle with weapons drawn and opened fire on the victim, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at South Suburban Hospital about 1:30 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The offenders drove south toward Pulaski Road, but police did not respond to questions Monday of whether they have since been apprehended and charged.
The shooting comes a little over a year after Hillcrest freshman Marshawn Mitchell was killed near Hillcrest after the school’s homecoming football game.
The homicide remains unsolved.
District 228 said in Saturday’s release that it is providing counseling and other support “for anyone in need during this difficult time.”
“The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community continue to be our highest priority,” the district said.
Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 708-206-2899.
