A father and his adult son died Saturday after one tried to save the other at Boaters Beach in Burns Harbor, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Around 4 p.m., DNR Conservation Officer Alex Neel said one of the men started struggling in the water, so the other man went into the water to assist but started struggling in the water himself.

The men were retrieved by a DNR patrol boat and taken to the Port of Indiana where paramedics administered lifesaving measures and transported them by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

They were later pronounced dead at the Northwest Health Valparaiso Emergency Room around 6:16 p.m.

The deceased were identified as 65-year-old David Meneou, of Joliet, Illinois, and 20-year-old Jameson Meneou, of Lockport, Illinois, according to a release from the Porter County Coroner’s Office.

Boaters Beach is located next to the old Bailly Generating Station and is part of the Indiana Dunes National Park.
