Senior defensive specialist Neo Ciotti made 25 passes, 10 digs, and two aces, and Scotts Valley High’s boys volleyball team earned a 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 22-25, 15-8 win over Pacific Collegiate School in their nonleague match on Monday.

“Games 3 and 4, PCS was fired up and challenged us; we got rattled and made errors and broke down, ” said first-year Falcons coach Thira Wallwork, a member of Harbor’s 1992 CIF state championship team who went onto play setter and opposite at Santa Clara University. “Game 5 we were fired up and unstoppable.”

Middle blocker Flavio Aiudicii, an exchange student from Italy, made seven blocks for the Falcons. Senior middle blocker Otto Palma had six blocks and two kills.

Scotts Valley (1-0) plays at Rancho San Juan on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

High school baseball

At Soquel 10, Rancho San Juan 0; 5 inn. >> Noah Piona had a hit and three RBI, and the Knights opened their season with a five inning shutout on Monday.

Hudson Summerrill had three hits, two RBI, and scored twice. Jake Escalante had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice. Gabe Virgallito had two hits and scored three runs.

Dylan Hull struck out six batters over four innings and earned the win.

Soquel (1-0) plays at Carmel on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

At Monte Vista Christian 11, Kathleen MacDonald 0; 5 inn. >> Junior Jackson Haddad hit three doubles, drove in a pair of runs, and scored a run in the Mustangs’ season opening win Monday.

Winning pitcher Chris Bautista, a sophomore, threw a complete game with 14 strikeouts.

Senior Tyson Shaw had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice for MVC. Carter Wright had two hits and scored a run, and Brady Cortez had a hit and scored three runs.

MVC (1-0) hosts Watsonville on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

High school softball

At MVC 11, Kathleen MacDonald 1; 5 inn. >> Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had three hits, including two doubles, four RBI, and scored twice in the Mustangs’ five inning rout to open their season Monday.

Ava Alvarado doubled, drove in a run, and scored twice. Samantha Bertoldi tripled and scored twice, and Elizabeth Van Scoter had a hit and two RBI. Gianna Johnson also scored twice.

Pitcher Harper Whitby earned the win.

MVC (1-0) plays at American (0-1) in Fremont on March 1 at 10 a.m.

Boys lacrosse

Monterey 16, at Santa Cruz 8 >> Senior captain Ethan Whitley scored four goals and an assist for the Cardinals in their season-opening loss Monday.

It was the first match for Santa Cruz after the program took a hiatus of two years.

Sophomore Stephen Yee had three goals and an assist for the Cardinals (0-1), who host Pacific Grove on Friday at 6 p.m.
