Watsonville High senior Katelynn Ruiz took first out of 56 runners in the Mission Division race at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Cross Country Championships at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel on Saturday.
Ruiz completed the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 45 seconds.
MVC senior Kylie Brunelli (20:14) took second, and freshman teammate Anna Conca (20:50) was third. Mustangs sophomore Finley Castro (21:40) took eighth, and Watsonville junior Lizbeth Gomez Abrica (21:41) took ninth.
Watsonville (50) took second to Salinas (41) in the eight-team race. MVC had an incomplete squad.
The Central Coast Section champions run from 10 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. at Crystal Springs Cross Country Course in Belmont on Nov. 16.
Cypress Division >> Pacific Collegiate freshman Iris Paten (21:02) took first out of 35 runners in the 5,000-meter Cypress Division race at the PCAL Championships at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel on Saturday.
Pumas freshman Alice Gilbert-King (24:26) took ninth, and Pajaro Valley junior Emily Lopez (24:40) took 10th.
Anzar (19) took first out of three teams. PCS and Pajaro Valley had incomplete squads.
Boys cross country
Gabilan Division >> MVC senior Justin McCullick (17:34) took seventh and junior teammate Gavin Beckmen (17:34) took eighth in the 5,000-meter Gabilan Division race at the PCAL Championships at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel on Saturday.
Alisal senior Gustavo Perez (16:59) took first out of 34 runners and led the Trojans (70) to second place behind Marina (47) in the five-team race. MVC (73) took fifth.
Mission Division >> Watsonville sophomore Nain Garcia-Ferria (18:04) took ninth in the 5,000-meter Mission Division race at the PCAL Championships at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel on Saturday.
Carmel senior Mack Aldi (16:21) took first out of 63 runners and led the Padres (57) to second place behind Salinas (53) in the nine-team race. Watsonville (170) took seventh.
Cypress Division >> PCS freshman Alexander Profumo (18:54) took third out of 39 runners in the 5,000-meter Cypress Division race at the PCAL Championships at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel on Saturday.
Pumas senior Roark Anderson (18:59) took fifth and sophomore teammate Jude Holmlund (19:21) was eighth. Kirby junior Mason Vergho (19:30) was ninth, and freshman teammate Manuel Florean (19:42) was 10th.
Pacific Grove junior Antony Gabrik (17:59) took first and led the Breakers (34) to the team title. Kirby (75) took second, and PCS (75) was fourth.
Santa Lucia Division >> Pajaro Valley junior Erik Michi (18:37) took fourth and classmate Luis Martinez (18:39) was fifth in the 5,000-meter Santa Lucia Division race at the PCAL Championships at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel on Saturday.
Ceiba senior Diego Sanchez (19:05) took seventh and classmate Anthony Toriz (19:37) took 10th.
Palma senior Wells Lilly (17:25) took first out of 33 runners, and the Chieftains (45) edged Pajaro Valley (45) for the title in the four-team race. Ceiba had an incomplete squad.
Men’s basketball
At Cabrillo 55, San Joaquin Delta 52 >> Dai’shaun Buie scored 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, and the Seahawks earned their first win of the season Saturday to close the Tip-off Classic.
Johnny Gasaloga had nine points and seven rebounds for the Seahawks, who led 31-21 at the half.
Cabrillo was 17-of-57 shooting from the field, including 1-of-20 from beyond the arc. It was 20-of-32 from the free throw line.
Cabrillo (1-1) hosts Napa Valley (0-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Women’s basketball
Santa Ana 69, at Cabrillo 51 >> Sydney Chesnut had 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, but the Seahawks lost in their season opener Saturday.
Jess Berry had eight points, eight rebounds, and three assists for the Seahawks, who led 21-13 after the first quarter. Gabby Brooks scored seven points. Renee Parker had six points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Faith Esquer also scored six points.
The Seahawks committed 17 turnovers.
Cabrillo (0-1) plays at Santa Barbara (1-0) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Girls flag football
PCAL Championship >> No. 8 seed Watsonville lost to No. 3 King City 21-12 in the PCAL Championship at Palma High on Saturday.
Wildcatz quarterback Fernando Lazo threw touchdown passes to Stephanie Martinez and Brianna Leon.
Women’s volleyball
UC Santa Cruz goes 3-1 in Texas >> The Banana Slugs beat Hardin-Simmons 25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 25-20 and lost to LeTourneau 25-13, 18-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-11 on Saturday to wrap up their Texas road trip with a 3-1 mark.
Heidi Collins had 16 kills against Hardin-Simmons. Kelly Ann Greene had 12 kills, and Kate Lau had 10 kills and 12 digs. Margo Melgoza had 42 assists and five aces, and Ashley Magley had five aces. Anna Hospodar made 17 digs and Ella Sniezek had 15 digs.
Greene made 16 kills against LeTourneau. Magley had 11 kills and Lau had 10 kills. Melgoza made 39 assists, and Hospodar made 25 digs.
UCSC competes in the Coast-To-Coast Conference Tournament beginning Nov. 15 in Christopher Newport, Virginia.
Women’s golf
Sneak Peek >> UCSC took second out of six teams with a 614 total at the Sneak Peek at Split Rail Golf Club in Aledo, Texas, on Saturday to close the fall season. Mary Hardin-Baylor (599) won the team title.
The Banana Slugs’ Adeline Truong took second with a 146 total. Teammate Samantha Shaw (152) took fourth, and Olivia Lew (155) tied for seventh.
Beach volleyball
No Attitudes >> Two Aptos teams earned division wins at the No Attitudes Tournament at Main Beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday.
Jason Smith and Pat McMillen won the men’s division, and Gina Fiorini and Emily Patz won the women’s division.
Scotts Valley’s Lise Corstorphine and Maddie Dilles (teen gold), and San Jose’s Raj Gollapalli and Joanne Chin (coed) also earned division wins.
