Which robocalls are legal

If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, it’s a robocall. A robocall trying to sell something is illegal without written permission. However, the following five types of robocalls don’t require consent:

• Messages that are purely informational. This includes calls about school closures, evacuation warnings or power outages

• Debt collection calls for legitimate debts

• Political calls

• Some healthcare calls, such as calls from your pharmacy or doctor’s office

• Messages from charities, if the charity itself is calling. Third parties calling on behalf of charities may only call members of the charity or prior donors, and they must include an automated option to let you stop future calls.

If you get a sales robocall, don’t buy what they are selling.
