DALLAS >> Billboard will honor Dallas R&B legend Erykah Badu with the Icon Award at its annual Women in Music event, the outlet announced Wednesday.

At the March 29 ceremony in Los Angeles, which will be hosted by actress Laverne Cox, Badu will be recognized for her “genre-defying career and cultural impact,” according to Billboard.

The Big D native sings, designs, DJs and acts (she cameoed in a recent Netflix adaptation of playwright August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson”).

Past recipients of the Billboard award include singers Aretha Franklin, Cyndi Lauper and Shania Twain.

Badu’s rise to fame began with her 1997 debut album “Baduizm,” a treatise on Black feminism that produced hits including “Appletree” and “On & On.”

Her 2000 sophomore project, “Mama’s Gun,” continued the momentum and put her sultry vocals back on display with popular singles such as “Didn’t Cha Know?”

For her contributions to neo soul, Badu has been dubbed the queen of that genre.

When she broke out in the late ’90s, she was known for wearing Afrocentric headwraps and scarves. Her fashion staples since have been an eclectic mix of towering top hats, grills adorning her teeth and other jewelry covering her body.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America honored her with their version of an icon award in 2024.
