Riq Woolen intercepted Caleb Williams’ late pass and the Seattle Seahawks boosted their fading playoff hopes, squeezing past Chicago 6-3 on Thursday night to drop the Bears to 4-12 with their 10th straight loss.
Jason Myers kicked field goals on the game’s first possession and near the end of the second quarter. Woolen picked off a deep pass intended for Keenan Allen at the Seattle 22 with 20 seconds left, ending Williams’ NFL rookie-record string of passes without an interception at 353.
Geno Smith threw for 160 yards, and the sluggish Seahawks (9-7) made just enough plays to come away with a win they sorely needed after dropping two in a row. They came in trailing the NFC West-leading Los Angeles Rams by a game with two remaining.
Leonard Williams had two of Seattle’s seven sacks.
Chicago is 0-4 with interim coach Thomas Brown.
Cowboys shut Lamb down for season
The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down CeeDee Lamb with two games remaining after their 2023 All-Pro receiver spent the second half of the season dealing with a sprained right shoulder.
The team said that additional exams revealed enough damage to keep Lamb off the field Sunday at Philadelphia and in the final game at home against Washington. The team said surgery was not expected to be required.
Lamb initially injured his right shoulder when it hit the turf hard twice in a 27-21 loss at Atlanta on Nov. 3. He kept playing and had at least 100 yards in each of his last two games — both victories — before getting shut down.
Lamb finishes the season with 101 catches for 1,194 yards and six TDs.
Seahawks place lead rusher on IR
The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Kenneth Walker III on injured reserve because of an ankle injury.
Walker hurt his ankle in last week’s loss to Minnesota and left that game after sitting out the previous two because of a calf problem. He also missed two weeks in September with an oblique issue.
Walker has run for 573 yards and seven touchdowns on 153 carries. Walker could, in theory, return if the Seahawks win two playoff games, though their postseason hopes were slim entering the game against Chicago.
With Walker out, Seattle signed rookie running back George Holani off the practice squad.
Edwards out, Dobbins could return for L.A.
The Los Angeles Chargers could have running back J.K. Dobbins for Saturday’s game against the New England Patriots.
Dobbins has been on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury against Baltimore on Nov. 25.
He was listed as questionable, while Gus Edwards — who rushed for two touchdowns and a season-high 68 yards in last Thursday’s win over Denver — was ruled out with an ankle injury.
Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins would likely take over in the backfield if Dobbins can’t play.
Carroll wants to coach Bears at 73 years old
Pete Carroll, scheduled to begin teaching at USC this spring, has reportedly expressed interest in the Chicago Bears’ head coaching job.
The Bears have lost nine games in a row, including all three under interim coach Thomas Brown.
Carroll is 73 and appeared done when he was nudged out the door by the Seahawks after the 2023 season — although his contract paid him $15 million through this season.
NFL head coaches have been skewing younger. If Carroll were hired, he’d be seven years older than the current oldest NFL head coach, Andy Reid.
The Bears are one of at least three teams — the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets are the others — that will be shopping for a head coach when the season ends.
Chicago fired Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29, one day after a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions that concluded with perplexing clock mismanagement by the coach and his quarterback.
The Bears have had six different coaches since 1998.
