Warriors sign Santos to 2-year extension

With a mixture of old and young, the future of the Warriors is anybody’s guess.

The Warriors made it clear Saturday, however, that Gui Santos would be part of the solution, announcing a two-year contract extension to the Brazilian-born forward in advance of their game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

A second-round pick (No. 55 overall) in 2022, Santos has played in 48 games with 13 starts this season and has participated in the developmental G-League. In the last 12 games, Santos has been in double figures 11 times, averaging 15 points on 58.8% shooting, with coach Steve Kerr calling him one of their top “shot creators” even if his style is a little unorthodox.

He’s also shot 43.1% from 3-point range with 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 28.8 minutes during that span.

New rules coming in time for World Cup

An adjusted version of an off-field treatment rule that Lionel Messi complained about in 2024 was adopted in time for the World Cup by the International Football Association Board on Saturday.

The annual general meeting of IFAB, which sets the rules of the game globally, also expanded the scope of the VAR to include corner kicks and second yellow cards and other measures to speed up the game.

Under the off-field treatment rule, players who cause a delay to the game because of injury “will be required to leave the field of play and remain off for one minute once play has restarted.”

Major League Soccer originally implemented the rule with a two-minute waiting period. During a match in 2024, Messi went down for an extended time with an apparent knee injury and was sent to the sideline to wait for two minutes before reentering.

He was seen complaining during the wait, saying, “With this type of rule, we’re going in a bad direction.”

Man city wins to keep pressure on arsenal

Without the injured Erling Haaland, Manchester City relied on the latest goal from recently signed forward Antoine Semenyo to secure a win that kept the pressure on Arsenal in the Premier League title race on Saturday.

Semenyo did his best Haaland impression by meeting a low cross with a close-range finish for the winner in first-half stoppage time as City held firm to beat Leeds 1-0 and trim the gap to Arsenal to two points.

It was Semenyo’s sixth goal in 11 games since joining from Bournemouth in January.

Arsenal hosts Chelsea on Sunday. Both Arsenal and City have 10 games left and look to be the only contenders for the title.

Haaland was unavailable for the trip to Leeds after sustaining what City manager Pep Guardiola described as a “little injury” in training on Thursday. It was the first league match the Norway striker has missed all season.

Medvedev wins title in Dubai in walkover

Daniil Medvedev won his 23rd ATP singles title at the Dubai Championships in the United Arab Emirates when Tallon Griekspoor withdrew from Saturday’s final with an injury.

Griekspoor hurt his left hamstring on Friday against Andrey Rublev and won their two-sets semifinal but couldn’t recover for the final.

“I have been better, that’s for sure,” the Dutchman said at the trophy ceremony. “I went to the hospital this morning and had a couple of scans, which showed something serious. It ... will keep me from the court in the coming weeks.”

It’s Medvedev’s second title of the year and his second in Dubai after victory in 2023.

“That’s what is crazy about it,” Medvedev said. “I never did it in any city in the world and the first time I do it, it’s (via) a walkover.”
