‘FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM'
PG-13
What it's about: This Harry Potter spinoff finds a British wizard, Newt, smuggling magical creatures into 1926 New York City and using them to fight evil.
The kid attractor factor: This will be total catnip to kids, tweens and teens who love the Harry Potter franchise, though this film is about adults, not kids.
Violence: There are sequences of mayhem, chase scenes, threatened violence, implied child abuse and shots of dead bodies killed by an invisible force.
Language: None.
Sexuality: The sexy Queenie flirts with Kowalski; they share a kiss.
Drugs: Some giggle juice at a speak-easy.
Parents advisory: Appropriate for older kids and teens.
‘THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN'
R
What it's about: A teen misfit spins out of control when her best friend starts dating her brother.
The kid attractor factor: Teen star Hailee Steinfeld and the genre will appeal to younger audiences.
Violence: None.
Language: Lots of strong cursing throughout, as well as sexual references.
Sexuality: Aside from the language, there are a few sexual situations involving teens — in bed, making out in cars, complicated communication around consent.
Drugs: Drinking
Parents advisory: This is definitely a teen movie about the real things teens do: drink, explore their sexuality, swear and act out. But it includes the consequences of all those things too and would be fine for teens. A bit too blue for kids.
‘ALMOST CHRISTMAS'
PG-13
What it's about: The Meyers clan gathers to celebrate the holiday after the death of matriarch Grace.
The kid attractor factor: The comic tone, adorable kid stars and festive genre will be a draw for younger audiences.
Violence: A rifle is pulled at the dinner table and a warning shot fired.
Language: Aunt May, as played by Mo'Nique, has quite a salty mouth. There is strong language throughout.
Sexuality: There is a discussion of sex, infidelity and implied sex, though no nudity. A kiss between neighbors with a long-standing crush.
Drugs: Aunt May likes her liquor, and youngest brother Evan has a problem with prescription pills.
Parents advisory: Fine for older kids and teens.
