Janiah Barker had her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds and top-ranked UCLA led throughout in its 69-37 victory over Cal Poly on Monday night at Pauley Pavilion.

Londynn Jones and Angela Dugalic also scored 12 points in UCLA’s first home game since it took over the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll on Nov. 25.

Timea Gardiner added 11 points for the Bruins (11-0), who were missing leading scorer and rebounder Lauren Betts. The junior center, third in the Big Ten in scoring at 19.8 points per game, was sidelined due to a lower leg injury.

Mary Carter scored 11 points for Cal Poly (4-6), which has dropped four of its last five.

Notre Dame jumped to No. 3 in The Associated Press Top 25 on Monday after beating rival UConn last week.

The Irish climbed five spots after the 79-68 victory over the Huskies, who fell two places to fourth. Notre Dame’s victory over UConn gave the Irish three wins over top five teams this season. They also beat USC and Texas.

UCLA remained the No. 1 team, receiving 30 of the 32 first-place votes from a national media panel. South Carolina was second and received a first-place vote, as did Notre Dame.

LSU was fifth with Texas, USC and Maryland following the Tigers. Duke and Oklahoma rounded out the top 10.

Cal entered the poll for the first time since 2019, coming in at No. 24. The Bears are 12-1 with the lone loss coming against No. 15 Michigan State.

South Carolina, UCLA, Duke and Texas will play in a round-robin women’s tournament in Las Vegas next year during Thanksgiving week.

The Players Era Women’s Championship will allow the opportunity for athletes on each team to engage in at least $1 million of NIL activities with the title group and sponsors.

Each of the teams will play the other three teams.

“As a program striving to consistently compete at a championship level, it’s essential to measure ourselves against the best,” said UCLA coach Cori Close. “We’re excited for a rematch with South Carolina and the opportunity to compete against other exceptional programs.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Tennessee held onto No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the second consecutive week, though No. 2 Auburn closed the gap as the top five remained unchanged.

UConn made the biggest jump this week, climbing seven spots to No. 11 after beating Gonzaga. UCLA climbed six spots to No. 18 after beating Arizona for its eighth straight win.

The Volunteers received 50 first-place votes from the national media panel after wins over Miami and Illinois pushed coach Rick Barnes’ program to 10-0 for only the fifth time in school history. Auburn picked up nine first-place votes from last week and had 12 total. Iowa State, Duke and Kentucky rounded out the top five.

Tennessee is among five unbeatens left in men’s Division I basketball and one of three from the SEC, joining No. 7 Florida (10-0) and No. 14 Oklahoma (10-0). Drake (9-0) and Utah State (10-0) also enter this week undefeated.

Auburn improved to 9-1 with its 91-53 blowout of Ohio State in Atlanta.

The SEC continued to dominate the Top 25 with the Vols and Tigers joined by Kentucky, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Florida in giving the league five of the top seven. Kansas moved up two spots to No. 8 while Marquette and Oregon rounded out the top 10.

MLB

The Baltimore Orioles agreed to a one-year contract with Japanese star Tomoyuki Sugano, a right-hander coming off an MVP season in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Central League.

Sugano spent 12 years with the Yomiuri Giants. He won MVP honors last season, going 15-3 with a 1.67 ERA.

The 35-year-old Sugano, an eight-time All-Star, went 136-74 with a 2.43 ERA in 276 games for the Giants. He also won Central League MVP honors in 2014 and 2020.

HORSE RACING

The future of horse racing in Northern California was dealt a blow Monday when the California Authority of Racing Fairs voted unanimously to withdraw its application for a racing meeting starting later this month at Pleasanton Fairgrounds.

The California Horse Racing Board had been set to discuss racing at Pleasanton at its meeting on Thursday.

Golden State Racing, a consortium of owners, trainers, and breeders working with the CARF, had proposed a reduced meeting from Dec. 26-June 8. The current meeting at Pleasanton, which began in October, ends Wednesday.

Business at Pleasanton has been down considerably compared to the Golden Gate Fields fall meeting in 2023. Golden Gate Fields, located about 30 minutes from Pleasanton, closed permanently in June, leading to the creation of the Golden State Racing meeting.

“The mounting economic challenges felt throughout horse racing and inconsistent handle in Northern California compel the conclusion that, for now, Pleasanton operating as a training facility and Southern California running races for horses stabled there would be in the best interests of both Northern California and Southern California,” the California Horse Racing Board said in a statement.

Last month, CHRB chairman Greg Ferraro was critical of the Golden State Racing meeting, and said that if an effort to sustain racing in Northern California fails “we could take down racing in the state.”

“While this conclusion is undoubtedly disappointing to nearly everyone involved and presents its own challenges, the CHRB views this arrangement as temporary,” the racing board said.

Thorpedo Anna, the favorite to earn Horse of the Year honors after winning six of seven races this year, has undergone minor dental surgery to remove a bone fragment in her jaw.

The 3-year-old is currently on a break at trainer Ken McPeek’s farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and wasn’t scheduled to return to racing until next year.

Thorpedo Anna had a small sore inside her mouth and further testing showed a small piece of dead bone that became separated from healthy bone in her jaw.

Thorpedo Anna will join McPeek’s stable at Fair Grounds in New Orleans next month to resume training.

This year, she’s won the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, Cotillion Stakes, and Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
