HARBOR CITY — It had been 49 days since Narbonne played its last football game after four forfeit victories stemming from allegations by the other four Marine League coaches of rules violations.
It wiped away not just all of its league contests, but a senior night that had to be pushed back prior to Friday night’s opening-round playoff contest.
The Gauchos, looking to shake off the rust in their CIF L.A. City Section Open Division opener, received one more blow hours prior to kickoff when seven players were ruled ineligible by the City.
It ultimately did not matter and any rust was quickly left behind as top-seeded Narbonne rushed for four first-half touchdowns and rolled to a 47-13 quarterfinal victory over eighth-seeded Dorsey.
“The kids love playing football,” Gauchos coach Malcolm Manuel said. “They came to work every single day in that timespan and our coaching staff did a great job. We treated it as professional as possible. We knew we would have another chance to play, we just didn’t know when, and tonight we got an opportunity. It showed tonight how our coaches prepared and did a great job all week.”
The Gauchos (9-2), who were playing for the first time since Sept. 27, were without receivers Allen Blaylock and Xavier Owens, defensive back/receivers Hakim Frampton and Nazarus Williams, linebacker Mark Edwards, athlete Damari Hall and defensive lineman Keytrin Harris.
Manuel said he learned of the ruling roughly eight hours before kickoff and chalked it up to another bump in the road. Manuel said he did not receive clarification about the decision from City officials.
“It’s just another obstacle,” Manuel said. “We want to know what exactly it is that’s keeping them out. From our understanding, they did everything right. It kind of threw us off-guard because they didn’t tell us exactly what it was. They just said they couldn’t play. So, we’re looking forward to the next couple days. Those guys, not only are they good football players, but they’re good kids and they deserve to play.”
Now, Manuel is now looking forward to hosting next Friday’s semifinals against fourth-seeded Birmingham (6-4). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Patriots have won the last four Open Division championships and their last 48 games against City opponents, including Friday’s 42-19 quarterfinal win over fifth-seeded Gardena.
Manuel said he’s hopeful that he will have his full roster available.
“In my opinion, I think Birmingham is a top-two team in the City,” Manuel said. “Whether you want to put us a two or one, I think the top two teams in the City are playing next week and we need those guys.”
The Dons (7-4) still had no answer for one key Gauchos transfer. Quarterback Jaden O’Neal threw for two touchdowns and ran for a pair to lead the charge.
Narbonne was locked in from the outset, scoring touchdowns on its first two drives en route to a 33-6 halftime lead.
O’Neal, who ran for a pair of scores in the half, also threw for a touchdown to receiver Michael Ashford to give the Gauchos a 13-6 lead late in the first quarter.
Like his coach, O’Neal was grateful to just be back on the field after the team struggled at first with its “energy” while waiting for its next chance to play.
“For the past several weeks, just keeping the brotherhood, staying as one unit, we were able to prepare and come out strong,” O’Neal said.
