Gavin Early scored 30 points to help the San Domenico boys basketball team avenge its loss in the NorCal Division V championship game last season with a 63-59 victory against Athenian on Friday.
Early also had 13 rebounds and four steals for the Panthers (7-2). Kris Jakstas added 13 points and Irakli Jokhadze played strong defense, finishing with four steals to go with five assists.
San Domenico took control of the game by outscoring the Owls (6-4) by 14 in the second quarter. Early scored 13 of his points in the frame.
The Panthers built the lead as high as 18 in the second half before the Owls stormed back to get within two points in the final seconds. Jakstas hit a pair of clutch free throws to secure the victory.
• Joe Hammond had 13 points, six assists and three steals to lead Marin Catholic to a 55-47 victory in an all-MCAL affair against San Marin at the Casa Grande tournament on Friday night. Henry Dibble had 10 points and nine rebounds for MC (4-5) while Kelly Storms added nine points. MC will play for the championship at Casa Grande High on Saturday night. J.D. Rhodes had nine points to pace the Mustangs (3-3), who will play in the third-place game Saturday.
• Evan Brewster posted a double-double as Terra Linda took a 64-39 victory over Skyline at the Frank Wells Tournament at Albany High on Thursday. Brewster had 13 points and 10 rebounds, plus two blocks, while Bennet Kaiser had 11 points and three rebounds. Chase Addleman added 10 points for the Trojans, who played McKinleyville in the semifinals Friday. TL (8-0) won that game as well, 45-36, getting 13 points from Pele Love and 10 from Addleman.
• Novato (2-5) dropped its tournament opener at the Frank Wells Basketball Classic on Thursday, falling 68-47 against host Albany.
• Marin Academy dropped a 77-75 nailbiter against Athenian on Thursday night.
Girls basketball
Izzy McFadden scored a game-high 21 points to lead Marin Catholic to a 61-32 road win against Montgomery on Friday night. Brooke Spagnuolo added 12 points for MC (4-4) and Jocelyn Gigounas added 11.
• Carly Amborn led the way with 22 points for San Domenico in a 58-43 loss to Eureka in the first round of the Maria Carrillo tournament on Thursday. The Panthers, who were without starting point guard Tosia Konczak, got a career-high 12 points from Sanne Kostecki. San Domenico faced Maria Carrillo on Friday, falling 60-26. Amborn had 12 points for San Domenico (2-6).
• Marin Academy (5-4) fell to McKinleyville 39-29 on Thursday night.
• The game between Redwood and Branson originally scheduled for Saturday at College of Marin has been moved to Feb. 1.
Girls soccer
Tam scored on a pair of second-half penalty kicks in a 2-1 victory against Marin Academy at Beach Chalet in San Francisco on Friday. Addie Covey created both PKs for Tam (3-0-2). Lauren Willard scored the first one and Lila Campbell got the second. MA (4-1-1) got on the board first when Raya Leikin crossed a ball to Reese Goodenough, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
• Josie Quinby netted a hat trick to lead Terra Linda to a 6-0 non-league victory against Novato on Friday. TL (4-1-2) also got goals from Sienna Economou and Allie Marovich. Isabelle Rossetti had three assists, Rashell Diaz had two, and Economou had one. Jojo Fetterman-Riggle had the shutout in goal against Novato (0-5-0). Freshman center back Bridget Dishong had a good game for Novato, according to coach Tricia Johnson, and Audrey Kobayashi came closest to scoring for the Hornets.
Boys soccer
Archie Williams put together its highest scoring game of the season in a 6-1 non-league win against San Rafael (2-4-1) on Friday. The Peregrine Falcons (3-2-1) scored five times in the first half.
• Marin Catholic fell 1-0 at home to Stuart Hall on Friday.
Men’s basketball
Darius Best led three players in double-digit scoring with 17 points for Dominican University in a 76-70 loss at home to Chaminade on Thursday night.
The Penguins (6-6, 1-3 PacWest) pulled within 72-70 on a basket by Best inside the final minute, then had a steal and a look at a game-tying shot inside the final 30 seconds. Jorge Ochoa added 15 points and Jaayden Bush added 14.
Women’s basketball
Jaidyn Brown scored a game-high 18 points as College of Marin rolled to its third consecutive win, 80-34 against Yuba on Thursday night. Ayah Abbassy (6-of-6 shooting) and Samantha Morris (7 of 9) both scored 15 points for the Mariners (6-7, 1-0 Bay Valley).
