Aptos High sophomore wrestler Dominic Cabot, senior teammate Lucas Zuniga, and San Lorenzo Valley senior Grady Cloyd took first place in their respective weight classes at the 60th Overfelt Classic in San Jose on Saturday.

Cabot (108 pounds) earned a 13-5 major decision over Lincoln freshman Adrian Rivera in the final to finish 2-1. He won by technical fall and fall in his other two matches.

Cloyd (192) pinned Lincoln’s Alijah Hernandez in 3:06 in the final to finish 4-0 with four pins.

Zuniga (217) earned a 6-3 decision SLV junior Ollin Bates in the final to finish 3-0 with a pair of pins. Bates went 2-1 with a 4-0 decision and 9-1 major deicision.

Watsonville sophomore Angel Barragan Marquez (167) lost to Sanger West sophomore Aaron Moreno in the final to place second. Marquez won his first match by tech fall, upset the No. 1 seed by an 11-4 decision in the quarterfinals, and earned a pin in the semifinals.

SLV’s Gabriel Attia (287) took fourth. Aptos’ Alfred Cabot (115) took fifth, as did Monte Vista Christian seniors Josh Tepoorten (177), and James Hanzlik (217).

Los Gatos (151.5 points) took first out of 30 teams, and Christopher (123.5) edged Monterey (122.5) for second. Aptos (84.0) finished ninth, and SLV (65.0) was 12th. MVC (31.0) took 20th, and Watsonville (25.5) was 21st.

Jim Root Memorial >> St. Francis senior Johnny Croghan (159 pounds) took first in his weight division at the 61st Jim Root Memorial at Prospect High in Saratoga on Saturday.

Croghan pinned Soquel senior Abran Zubiate in 5:14 in the final. Croghan went 5-0 with five pins. Zubiate went 4-1 with four pins.

Harbor senior August Bentley (140) took third, and freshman teammate Mateo Moreno (115) took fifth.

Paso Robles (227.5 points) took first out of 39 teams. Silver Creek (174.5) of San Jose took second, and Live Oak (124.5) of Morgan Hill. was third. Soquel (73.0) took 11th, Harbor (55.5) took 19th, St. Francis (34.0) was 29th.

Girls wrestling

Ladies Coast Classic >> Santa Cruz High freshman Vera Bentley (130) and SLV senior Gabriella Brasuell (155) took third in their respective weight divisions at the Ladies Coast Classic at Santa Cruz High on Saturday.

Santa Cruz sophomore Marlena Gustafson (125) took fourth.

Aptos junior Isabella Cruz (100) and Santa Cruz sophomore Heaven Cardenas (170) took sixth.

Monterey (168.5) took first out of 45 teams. Wilcox (155.0) took second, and Salinas (128.0) was third.

Santa Cruz (45.5) took 16th. SLV (22.0) took 20th, Aptos (18.5) took 24th, Harbor (9.0) was 27th, Watsonville (6.5) was 28th, and Soquel (1.0) was 29th.

Men’s volleyball

Carthage 3, at UC Santa Cruz 2 >> Senior outside hitter/opposite Dylan Foreman made 23 kills, but the Banana Slugs coughed up a 2-1 lead in sets and suffered a 25-22, 22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-13 loss in the Slugfest at the West Field House on Saturday night.

Junior outside hitter Riley Norman had 14 kills, 13 digs, five aces, and five assists for UCSC (4-3), who were pushed to five sets for the first time this season. AJ Contreras made 10 kills.

Sophomore setter Andrew Pak had 25 assists and 13 digs, and junior setter Caio Valente made 24 assists. Senior outside hitter/opposite Nico Espinoza made 19 digs.

Sophomore opposite Ben Heise had 15 kills for the Firebirds (4-0) of Kenosha, Wisconsin. Sophomore outside hitter Owen Hendricks had 14 kills and 11 digs.

UCSC faces New Paltz (0-4) of New York — a rematch of the 2019 NCAA Division III championship — at the West Field House on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Girls soccer

At MVC 1, Gilroy 1 >> Junior midfielder Ashley Drago took a corner kick that ended up in the goal after a deflection in the box, and the Mustangs earned a draw in their nonleague match Saturday.

The the teams were scoreless at the half.

Freshman goalie Charlotte Groves started in goal for the Mustangs and made two saves. Sophomore teammate Chloe Morrow played the second half and made two saves.

MVC (3-5-3, 1-2-1) plays at Carmel (2-5-4, 1-1-2) in PCAL Mission Division action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Boys basketball

At Kirby 63, Anzar 43 >> Junior guard Chris Lively had 19 points, six rebounds, and two assists, and the Griffins won their PCAL Santa Lucia Division game on Friday night at Branciforte Middle School.

Senior guard Rain Li had 15 points and eight rebounds for Kirby (3-9, 2-3).

Freshman guard Alon Teragawa had seven points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Griffins. Junior guard Henry Annon also scored seven points, and senior forward Phil Bock had four points and 11 rebounds.

Kirby plays at Monterey Bay Academy on Monday at 6 p.m.
