New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr injured his left hand late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 14-11 victory over the New York Giants when he went airborne while trying for a first down and crashed to the turf.

Carr tried to leap over a Giants tackler and landed at the New Orleans 39-yard line, extending his non-throwing hand to break his fall. He was on the turf for a minute or two before walking to the medical tent. He was examined and slowly walked to an area where X-rays are done.

“A phenomenal effort trying to make a first down,” interim coach Darren Rizzi said of the play.

Carr missed three games earlier this season with an oblique injury. Tight end Juwan Johnson said it looks like the QB will miss more time. Carr was not available to speak to reporters after the game.

“He’s just been having a rough go. We’re behind him,” Johnson said. “He’s still Derek Carr, aside from the football field. You just have to be there for him, emotionally, spiritually and physically.”

Rizzi was asked whether Carr would enter the concussion protocol after his jarring impact with the turf, but the coach could not confirm that.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell was carted off the field with a knee injury after being shoved to the ground after throwing a pass during the second half of Sunday’s 28-13 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The second-year pro, in his second game back after being sidelined nearly six weeks with a broken thumb, remained on the ground after an 8-yard, third down completion to Jakobi Meyers. Bucs defensive lineman Calijah Kancey chased O’Connell out of the pocket toward the Bucs sideline and pushed the quarterback from behind when he caught up to him after the ball was released.

Kancey was not penalized for a late hit.

The Raiders did not speculate on the severity of the injury.

“It doesn’t look good,” Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said.

STEELERS WR PICKENS MISSES GAME: Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens will have to wait to “introduce” himself to Cleveland Browns defensive back Greg Newsome II.

The Steelers made Pickens inactive for Sunday’s meeting against the Browns because of a hamstring injury.

Newsome and Pickens ended Cleveland’s 24-19 win over the Steelers on Nov. 21 by tussling on Pittsburgh’s last-gasp Hail Mary attempt, with Pickens grabbing Newsome’s facemask as the two careened through the end zone and slammed into a restraining wall.

Afterward, Newsome called Pickens a “fake tough guy.” Pickens responded on Friday by feigning ignorance and saying he didn’t even know who Newsome was when asked if he would talk to Newsome before the game.

Pickens, who has 55 receptions for 850 yards, hadn’t missed a game in his three-year career before Sunday.
