Ojeda nets hat trick to pass 50 career goals, Orlando and New England play to 3-3 draw
ORLANDO, Fla. >> Orlando City’s Martín Ojeda scored three times to blow past 50 career goals, Carles Gil tied it with a penalty kick late in the second half, and New England played Orlando City to a 3-3 draw on Saturday.
The score was 2-2 at halftime before Ojeda and Gil each converted a penalty kick in the second half.
Martín Ojeda (Orlando City) scored with a difficult left-footed shot from the left side of the box to the top left corner. He was assisted by César Araújo. It was Ojeda’s 49th career goal across all professional competitions. Goal No. 50 came nine minutes later, giving Orlando a 2-0 lead.
Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese had gone a club-record 526 minutes without conceding a goal, but he allowed Alhassan Yusuf’s score with a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the lower right zone in the 38th minute.
Matt Polster tied it in the 44th minute when he scored with a header from the center of the box to the bottom left corner.
Tarling wins Giro stage 2 by a second over new overall leader Roglic
TIRANA, Albania >> British cyclist Joshua Tarling beat pre-race favorite Primoz Roglic by a solitary second in an individual time trial to win the second stage of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday.
Roglic moved into the pink jersey, albeit only just.
Tarling, who rides for Ineos Grenadiers, finished the 14-kilometer (8.5-mile) route through the Albanian capital of Tirana in 16 minutes, seven seconds.
He faced a nervous wait to see if any of the following 58 riders could beat his time. Roglic went close but crossed the line just a second slower, to the obvious relief of Tarling, who shook his head and smiled wryly in the leader’s chair.
“It’s not nice, I don’t want to do it again,” Tarling said with a laugh when asked about the wait. “It was a long day for 13k ... Primoz really scared me so, yeah, it was stressful there.”
It was a first Grand Tour stage victory for Tarling, who also became the youngest Giro time trial winner in history at 21.
“I can’t believe it to be honest. I’ve been trying and I’m so happy,” he added.
Jay Vine was third, three seconds slower than Tarling.
Johnson’s two-run homer in 7th rallies Clemson past Florida State for ACC title
BRIGHTON, Mass. >> Kylee Johnson hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and the Clemson Tigers rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday in the championship game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
Johnson’s homer sent the second-seeded Tigers (44-12), who didn’t start playing softball until 2020, to their first victory in eight all-time meetings with the top-seeded Seminoles (46-9). Clemson has made five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament — all under head coach John Rittman.
Florida State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by Hallie Wacaser off Clemson starter Brooke McCubbin (15-5) and that’s where the score stood heading to the seventh.
Seminoles starter Ashtyn Danley allowed two hits and three walks in three shutout innings to begin the game. Julia Apsel followed with three hitless innings, but she was replaced by Jazzy Francik (10-3) after issuing a leadoff walk to Marian Collins. Francik struck out Taylor Pipkens on three pitches, but Johnson homered to center field on a 2-2 pitch to put the Tigers ahead.
