Sheila Ladd Nielsen (née Farr), 84, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2025, in Mill Valley, California.
Sheila was born on August 30, 1940, in Washington, D.C. Growing up she split time between her family homes in Chevy Chase, and the Farm in Comus, MD and She received her education at The Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, and later attended Bennington College in Vermont. Throughout her life, she cultivated a deep appreciation for learning and exploration, passions that shaped her many interests and pursuits.
An avid gardener and lover of travel, Sheila found joy in the beauty of the natural world and the richness of different cultures. She had a special fondness for her second home in Giverny, France, where she spent cherished time surrounded by the landscapes that inspired some of the world's greatest artists. Whether tending to her garden, setting off on new adventures, or sharing stories with those around her, Sheila brought warmth and vibrancy to every experience.
Sheila also had a lifelong love of horseback riding and reading—two pastimes that reflected both her adventurous spirit and her intellectual curiosity. She was known for her ability to tell fantastic stories, captivating listeners with her wit and vivid recollections.
Sheila is survived by her daughter Jandi Kidder; her son Galen Nielsen; her grandchildren Charlotte Nielsen, Hayes Nielsen, Sonny Nielsen, Chris Kidder, and Sam Kidder; her sister Janet Nelson; her sisters-in-law Katy Farr and Kathe Hardy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Chris Nielsen; her brothers Sharon Farr and Gavin Farr; and her sister-in-law Cathleen Farr.
Sheila’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A celebration of Sheila’s life will be held at Three Groves sometime in early April.
