Watch out for scams during tax season
Tax season is an especially dangerous time for scams. Many consumers are eagerly awaiting refunds or worried about penalties, making them easy targets. The National Taxpayer Advocate, an independent IRS watchdog, has identified tax-related scams as one of the agency’s biggest problems, warning that fraudsters are using artificial intelligence and social media to make their deceptions more convincing.
Here’s what you need to remember: The IRS will always contact you by mail — never by email or text. And whenever you receive a message claiming to be from a government agency, bank or business, follow these rules:
• Never click on links or open attachments.
• Be wary of urgent language designed to scare you.
• Never share personal information like passwords or your Social Security number. And reject any requests to send money directly.
