Senior runner Eli Fitchen-Young broke Santa Cruz High’s 16-year-old course record at UC Santa Cruz and led the Cardinals’ cross country team to a 15-50 win over Harbor, 15-50, on Thursday. Mount Madonna had an incomplete squad in the tri-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League meet.

Fitchen-Young completed the 2.08-mile course in 10 minutes, 34.80 seconds. He broke the old record, set by the Cardinals’ Brennan Lynch and Aptos’ Rylan Hunt in a photo finish, by 13 seconds.

“It was pretty amazing to do that all by himself,” Cardinals coach Greg Brock said. “It was a tremendous effort.”

Cardinals sophomore Nico van der Meer (12:28.50) took second and junior teammate Ari Wirth-Yap (12:29.60) was third. Santiago Hanna (14:32.40) was Harbor’s top runner in ninth place, and Kyler Nigh (16:46.20) was Mount Madonna’s top runner in 19th.

Aptos 15, at San Lorenzo Valley 42 >> The Mariners produced the top five finishers for a perfect score in their SCCAL meet win Thursday.

Senior Andrew Pursley (18:15), junior Brady Bliesner (18:17), sophomores Sam Hansen (18:17), and Anthony Sandford-Carroll (18:18), and senior Vincent Sandford-Carroll (18:18) scored for the Mariners on the 3-mile course.

SLV’s senior Cian Ryan (18:36) took sixth.

Girls cross country

Santa Cruz 17, Harbor 42 >> Freshman Isla Roake took first in 14:31.90 on UCSC’s 2.08-mile course to lead the Cardinals to the SCCAL meet win Thursday.

Cardinals senior Amelia Palm (14:42.70) was second, and junior teammate Chloe Hood (15:27.20) was third. Harbor’s Hadassah Zav Cohen took fourth in 16:24.70.

At SLV 20, Aptos 43 >> Mariners junior Maya Schiro (20:41) completed the 3-mile course first in Felton, but the Cougars produced the next ninth finishers in their SCCAL meet win Thursday.

Freshman Skyla Leggett (20:56), sophomore Beth Gabrielson (21:38), seniors Naomi Seastrom (21:59) and Ruby Evans (22:12), and freshman Stella Sutcliffe (22:19) scored for the Cougars.

Girls tennis

At Aptos 7, Soquel 0 >> Kiana Safari, Aviana Andrews, Coral Collins, and Isabella Calderon didn’t drop a game in their straight-set wins, and the SCCAL champion Mariners (11-3, 10-0) finished league play unbeaten on Thursday.

Natalia Calderon and Charlotte Long, Aracely Ritchie and Gia Arista, and Fin Gansauer-Pilcher and Gamble Kellermyer earned doubles wins in straight sets.

The SCCAL Tournament for singles and doubles takes place at Imperial Courts Tennis Club in Aptos on Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. and concludes Nov. 6 at 3 p.m.

Scotts Valley 5, at Harbor 2 >> The Falcons won their regular-season finale and finished with an 8-2 record for second place in the SCCAL on Thursday.

“This team got better and better as the season went along”, Falcons coach Scott Goodrich said. “We had 19 players on the roster and everyone contributed and everyone improved. I couldn’t be more proud of this group.”

Harbor defaulted at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Scotts Valley earned singles wins from Erin Syzmanski at No. 1 and Montserrat Burgos-Saavedra at No. 3, and a doubles win from Abbey Cox and Raquel Sullivan at No. 1.

In a battle of cousins, Harbor freshman Audrey Stenton beat sophomore Georgia Chetcuti 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at No. 2 singles. In the longest and most competitive match of the day, the Harbor’s Emily Reyes Seyboyan and Mary Groyou beat Zicheng Zeng and Konie Lim 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Boys water polo

Soquel 16, at Aptos 3 >> Nico Palandrani and Cash Wolf each scored three goals, and the Knights finished the regular season in second place in the SCCAL on Thursday.

Stryder Stelck had two goals, five assists, and two steals for the Knights. Cane Mitchell and Sam Robertson each scored twice, and Jacob Henshaw, Jake Martinez, Noah Mitnick, and Tanner Connors also scored.

Henshaw made nine saves for Soquel (16-7, 6-2).

Senior Jack Widman scored two goals for the Mariners, and classmate Gavin Abundis also scored.

Girls water polo

Soquel 11, at Aptos 2 >> Elizabeth Penny and Natasha Ackerstein each scored three goals, and the SCCAL champion Knights finished with a perfect league campaign Thursday.

Keira “Kiki” Burke and Grace Graessle each scored twice for the Knights (15-5, 8-0). Libby Forrest added a goal. Sophomore goalie Hannah Herrickhad eight saves, two assists, and two steals.

Mariners goalie Mary Suarez-Abraham made seven saves. Avery Hadland and Riley Knudsen each scored a goal.

The Knights play in the Norcal Invitational in Palo Alto this weekend, and the SCCAL Tournament semifinals on Wednesday.

Harbor 16, at SLV 8 >> Senior Abigail Higgins had nine goals, three steals, and drew four ejections in the Pirates’ SCCAL win Thursday.

Senior Serena Manildi had two goals, six assists, three steals, and drew six ejections for the Pirates. Lily Grauman had two goals and assists. Malalai Martin Etemadi also scored twice, and Zia Jaggar added a goal.

Sophomore goalie Kallista Whitmore had eight saves, two assists, and a steal for the Pirates (8-12, 2-6), who host SLV in the SCCAL Tournament on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Harbor 3, Mount Madonna 0 >> Senior middle blocker Jocelyn Ruelas had five kills, and senior outside hitters Tea Stockwell and Holly Rejfir each had three kills as the SCCAL regular-season champion Pirates won 25-6, 25-12, 25-11 in the final league match Thursday.

Senior setter Callahan Stone made nine assists for the Pirates.

Harbor (19-9, 12-0) will host the semifinals of the SCCAL Tournament on Tuesday. The higher seed plays Soquel at 5 p.m. and the lower seed plays Harbor at 7 p.m.

Soquel 3, at Aptos 0 >> Claire Petersen had 15 kills, four aces, and 26 digs, and the Knights earned a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 sweep in SCCAL action Thursday.

Soquel hit .360. Jillian Winterburn had 11 kills and 15 digs for the Knights, and teammate Sadie Holden had 10 kills and seven digs. Lily Juarez-Sapone made 37 assists and eight digs.

Soquel 19, Aptos 12 >> The Knights handed the Mariners their first league loss in two years in Wednesday’s SCCAL game.
