Colorado’s momentum in recruiting isn’t slowing down.
On Saturday, the Buffaloes and first-year head coach Deion Sanders got a verbal commitment from Ju’Juan Johnson, a four-star athlete in the 2024 class who visited CU last weekend.
Listed at 5-foot-11, 178 pounds, Johnson is rated as the No. 4 overall prospect from Louisiana by Rivals.com and No. 5 overall by 247Sports.com.
The Lafayette (La.) Christian Academy star had Florida and LSU as his other finalists before picking the Buffs. He’s got 18 scholarship offers, including from Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M.
“I want to go and start a new beginning and be a part of a team that’s creating a foundation and that’s why I chose Prime Time,” Johnson said in announcing his decision at a ceremony at his school. “I feel like it’s more than football with (Sanders). It’s more than just being a football player with him. It’s more than just throwing a ball, catching a ball or guarding somebody. He’s gonna teach me how to become a man. Also, as you all probably know, he’s a Christian man, so I’m gonna still be learning about all I’m learning about over here at LCA. That’s the reason why I chose them.”
As a junior last season, Johnson threw for 3,976 yards, 43 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, while also rushing for 1,284 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Despite his impressive numbers at quarterback, Johnson is projected to play cornerback for the Buffs, according to 247Sports. Johnson has drawn attention from recruiters as a cornerback during summer camps.
CU and Sanders currently have the No. 21-ranked recruiting class for 2023, per 247Sports. So far, the Buffs’ 2024 class ranks No. 12 nationally, with Johnson being the second four-star in the class.
Defensive lineman Omar White (Valdosta, Ga.) is also a four-star commit for the Buffs in 2024. The class also includes a trio of three-stars: defensive lineman Eric Brantley (Valdosta, Ga.), receiver Daijon Calimon (Lawndale, Calif.) and offensive lineman Talan Chandler (Nevada, Mo.).
