The Colorado Rockies fired Bud Black, the winningest manager in franchise history, after a 7-33 start that’s one of the worst in Major League Baseball history.

Colorado promoted third base coach Warren Schaeffer to be the interim manager, the team announced Sunday after a 9-3 win over San Diego.

That victory wasn’t enough to save Black’s job after the Rockies lost 21-0 to the Padres on Saturday. They also fired bench coach Mike Redmond. Hitting coach Clint Hurdle takes over as interim bench coach.

The Rockies have the worst 40-game start since the 1988 Baltimore Orioles, who were 6-34.

On the field, Hunter Goodman hit a double, a triple and a home run and had five RBIs to help the Rockies snap an eight-game losing streak.

Germán Márquez (1-6) pitched seven innings and gave up a run on three hits.

Goodman’s triple off Nick Pivetta (5-2) drove in two before Mickey Moniak hit an RBI single to make it 6-1 in the third inning.

Pivetta gave up six runs on seven hits with two walks over four innings.

Michael King (4-1, 2.22 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Padres tonight against Yusei Kikuchi (0-4, 3.83 ERA) in the first of a three-game home series with the Angels.

KERSHAW UPDATE

Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw completed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday and will join the team’s starting rotation when he is eligible to come off the 60-day Injured List next weekend.

Kershaw went four innings for OKC Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks and hitting a batter while striking out two. He threw 57 pitches, 35 strikes.

Right-hander Michael Kopech also made a rehab appearance with OKC in the same game. Kopech gave up a double but retired three of the four batters he faced, two on strikeouts.

After walking all five batters he faced and throwing 20 balls in 23 —pitches in his first rehab outing, Kopech threw 14 pitches this time, 10 strikes. His fastball velocity held at 98-99 mph topped out at 99.7 mph.

BROTHER VS. BROTHER

Josh Jung delivered a special Mother’s Day gift to his mom, Mary.

The Texas Rangers third baseman hit a two-out, two-run homer in the fifth inning of his team’s 6-1 win at Detroit on Sunday. Jung’s brother, Jace, was in the Tigers’ lineup at the same position.

Before the game, Mary Jung delivered the game ball to the mound and her sons joined her on the field.

“My heart is just exploding. I mean, I couldn’t ask for a better Mother’s Day gift,” Mary Jung said in an interview on the Rangers’ telecast. “We’re all in the same place, to begin with. But then to watch them live their dream, do what they love to do, I couldn’t be more proud.”

AROUND THE MAJORS

Aaron Judge had four hits to get his average back above .400 and Ben Rice hit a grand slam to lead the New York Yankees to a 12-2 victory over the Athletics on Sunday in West Sacramento.

Judge hit a two-run single in a five-run second inning against former teammate Luis Severino (1-4) and added hits in his final three at-bats to raise his average on the season to .409 — the fourth highest ever for a player with at least 14 homers in the first 40 games of a season.

DaShawn Keirsey Jr. singled home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Minnesota Twins beat the San Francisco Giants 7-6, extending their winning streak to eight games.

Tim Elko’s first major league hit was a three-run homer in the sixth inning that helped the Chicago White Sox beat the Miami Marlins 4-2. The White Sox rebounded from getting swept in four games at Kansas City to win their third series of the season.

Lars Nootbaar, Willson Contreras and Nolan Arenado homered, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 6-1 to complete a three-game sweep. The Cardinals have swept back-to-back series during an eight-game winning streak, their longest since August of 2022.

Ronel Blanco struck out a career-high 11 in eight innings and Shawn Dubin completed the two-hitter to lead the Houston Astros to a 6-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Yainer Diaz hit a three-run homer for Houston.
