Use tourist tax to fulfill road needs

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings is pushing a penny sales tax increase to improve transportation. However, he passed up the opportunity to lobby for the ability to re-direct tourist development tax dollars for transportation needs.

Like Las Vegas, Orlando has approximately one million tourists in town every day, but Las Vegas uses some of its resort tax to provide the additional roads, pedestrian bridges, and other infrastructure needed to serve those tourists. Instead of using tourist tax dollars, Mayor Demings wants Orange County citizens to pay more for the tourists jamming up our highways.

Responsibility for babies

It was with great interest that I read South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s guest column on abortion. I was especially struck by her pronouncement that pregnancy involves two people, a woman and the unborn child.

The governor goes on to list the supportive agencies she has created to assist women both during and after the pregnancy. But never once does the learned governor refer to the responsibility of the sperm donor.

Curious. She seems not to know it takes two to tango — and baby makes three.

Only Trump can fix things

I wish someone who thinks Donald Trump will be a threat to democracy and bad for our country would explain why.

Is closing the border and finishing the wall a threat? Is producing our own oil, selling it to other countries and reducing the cost per gallon a threat? Is supporting police and law enforcement a threat?

I don’t care about Trump’s mouth or his extramarital affairs. (How about Bill Clinton or JFK?) That’s not our problem. It’s his wife’s problem. I’m not jealous of his money, his properties, his beautiful family and their successful lives. I care about my country, my life and the lives of my family and friends.

I am not blind as others are. I’m not ignorant as to what has happened since Barack Obama was elected and Joe Biden took over.

I have watched the news and have seen too many funerals of police officers. It must stop, and the only man who will stop it is Donald J. Trump.

Both sides failed

The April 7 political cartoon shows an elephant looking at the solar eclipse saying, “This is Biden’s fault.” It would have been a better cartoon if there had also been a donkey on the other side saying, “This is Trump’s fault.”

What a pitiful choice we have for president of the United States and leader of the free world.
