HIGHLANDS RANCH >> Perhaps a fitting farewell, senior Lucy Ochs, Fairview girls soccer’s goal leader the past two seasons, scored for the last time with the Knights in the final minutes of their 3-1 loss in Friday’s Class 5A state tournament second round.

Her 14th goal of the season, the 29th of her career, paused a ticking countdown with 6:11 remaining in her high school soccer career at Halftime Help Stadium — but only briefly.

Minutes later, No. 1 Mountain Vista was moving on in the playoff bracket. Meanwhile, for Ochs and her other senior teammates, they were, simply, moving on.

“It’s my senior season and my last season playing soccer and it’s been such a blast,” said Ochs, who is planning to study sports journalism at the University of Kansas. “I love this team so much. Being able to be a part of a team where you know every single day the coaches are rooting for you and believe in you, and all of the (other) players are rooting for you and believe in you, it’s something really special and unique, and something I’ve never been a part of before.”

Ochs’ last goal didn’t stave off elimination for No. 17 Fairview (10-6). But it did further highlight what Ochs described as a team that never relented this spring.

“Going down 3-0, we knew we had it in us to put something on the scoreboard,” she said. “I think it says so much about every person on the team. I mean, going down 3-0, that’s kind of tough. And I think sometimes that can get in players’ heads. But I think our team was able to pull through and fight to the end.”

Peyton Love, Avery Beer and Jordan Hopkins all scored in the first 60 minutes for the defending champion Golden Eagles. Next, they will face No. 8 Valor Christian in the quarterfinals, after it finished off a 2-0 win over No. 9 Boulder a few miles away.

No. 10 Broomfield was the only local team to survive 5A’s second round. No. 13 Legacy also lost, falling 5-2 to No. 4 Ralston Valley.
