Time flies when you’re having fun.
That’s what the past two seasons covering the Broncos have been for me. And that’s why it pains me to say my days on the beat and at The Denver Post have come to an end.
I’ve accepted a new job opportunity, requiring me to leave Colorado. Even though my time in Colorado was short, the memories were everlasting.
I’m going to be honest. I was emotional when I was offered the job at The Post because it was a chance to continue living my dream as a sports writer while covering an organization with a rich tradition in a passionate sports town.
At the same time, I didn’t know what to expect when I moved out here in April 2023. Growing up in Prince George’s County, Md., I never expected to live anywhere outside of the East Coast, let alone Colorado.
But this industry sometimes takes you to unexpected places.
I appreciate the entire sports staff for welcoming a DMV kid into the newspaper. From my editors, Matt Schubert, Sarah Kelly and the late Scott Monserud, to the great staff of writers and columnists, they made my transition a lot smoother.
I will forever thank Matt for believing in my ability to cover the Broncos and adding me to the Post’s coverage. The lessons I’ve learned from him I will take with me for the rest of my career.
I couldn’t ask for a better beat partner than Parker Gabriel. I don’t regret a single day working with Parker and doing our weekly podcasts together. He’s a great writer and has terrific knowledge of the game. I felt like I’ve learned even more about the game of football by being around him on an everyday basis.
There was never a dull moment at The Post. When I first arrived, I was thrown into the fire, assisting with the newspaper’s coverage of the Nuggets’ NBA Finals run — a highlight of my journalism career. A few months later came Sean Payton’s decision to bench Russell Wilson near the end of the 2023 campaign and usher in a new era by drafting Bo Nix.
I was fortunate to tell stories that I will cherish for a lifetime. From Sean Payton’s love for Jordan Brand sneakers, and the exclusive shoes he occasionally wears on the sideline during games, to Malcolm Roach playing against high school football players as a fifth grader.
When you can tell stories you are passionate about, it gives you a reason to get up and attack the day. I enjoyed learning about the players and who they were away from the football field. It amazed me to learn about the many lives safety Justin Simmons touched in the community during his eight-year career in Denver. But perhaps the best part was receiving emails or text messages from players’ former coaches and parents, as well as readers, saying how much they appreciated reading my work.
The Broncos are trending in the right direction, and I’m going to miss seeing that growth up close. The 2024 campaign was a lot more fun than expected, and it was a welcome surprise to be able to cover Denver’s first postseason game since 2015 (my freshman year of college). I think Denver has something special with Nix. But I’m going to have to watch from afar.
It’s been real, Denver. Now, it’s time to pack my bags and begin my next journey.
