Yankees: Giancarlo Stanton had a pair of singles and three RBIs for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday night in his first game this year, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that it was too early to tell when the slugger might return to the big leagues. Stanton had been sidelined since before spring training because of severe tendon injuries to both of his elbows. But he has been ramping up his work at the Yankees’ player development complex and Boone was optimistic the rehab assignment will not be long. “He’s playing tonight. Probably play tomorrow. And then we’ll see about Thursday, if he plays again or what we want to do through the weekend,” Boone said Tuesday night. “Just kind of taking these two-day increments.” Stanton had a two-run single in the fifth inning off David Sandlin and a RBI single in the seventh against Zach Bryant in the Patriots’ 8-1 win over the Red Sox’s Portland Sea Dogs. The designated hitter also grounded out and walked as part of a 2-for-3 night. The 35-year-old appeared in 114 games last season, hitting .233 with 27 homers and 72 RBIs. He was at his best in the playoffs, when he hit seven homers over 14 games and was voted the MVP of the AL Championship Series. “For him, it’s just getting his body built up and him being in a position to where he knows he’s had enough at-bats and enough reps to be game-ready, to be season-ready,” Boone said. “And he’s had a pretty big ramp-up. He’s had a lot of at-bats already, even going into his rehab start tonight. So, just making sure he’s had the necessary reps and feels really good.” Stanton hasn’t played a full season since 2018, the first year after the Yankees acquired him from the Marlins. Entering 2025, he had missed 294 of 870 games in the previous six seasons (34%).
Pirates: Andrew McCutchen hit a milestone three-run HR in the fifth to help the Pirates defeat the visiting Marlins 5-2 on Wednesday. McCutchen’s shot to left-center field off Cal Quantrill was his sixth of the season and 241st in 12 seasons with the Pirates, moving him past Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente into third place on the franchise’s career list. Willie Stargell (475) and Ralph Kiner (301) are ahead of McCutchen. The HR put the Pirates ahead 4-0 after they scored a run on catcher Nick Fortes’ throwing error in the second. The Pirates took two of three in the series, went 6-3 on the homestand and sent the Marlins to their eighth loss in 10 games. Bailey Falter (5-3) allowed one run — on rookie Heriberto Hernandez’s first career HR — on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA in eight starts since the beginning of May. David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save in as many chances. Quantrill (3-7) went five innings and gave up four runs — three earned — and six hits while striking out six. He lost his third straight start. Ke’Bryan Hayes had two hits for the Pirates. The Marlins got two hits each from Hernandez, Fortes and Connor Norby.
Phillies: Kyle Schwarber homered, Alec Bohm hit a solo shot and had four RBIs, and Jesús Luzardo struck out 10 in six innings to lead the Phillies to a 7-2 victory over the Cubs. The Phillies rebounded from a 1-5 road trip (and losers of nine of 10 games overall) to take two of three at home from the Cubs. Offense that’s been punchless this month perked up against the Cubs with five extra-base hits. Nick Castellanos also knocked his first triple of the year, and Max Kepler and Trea Turner both doubled. Luzardo (6-2) gave up 21 runs in 5 2/3 innings over his last two outings and his ERA ballooned to 4.46. He didn’t walk a batter in this one, allowed only one run and recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout game in his 15th start. Max Lazar worked two innings of relief and Michael Mercado tossed a scoreless ninth for the Phillies. The Phillies scored three runs in the first off Cubs starter Ken Brown (3-5) and Schwarber hit his 21st HR of the season in the third.
Guardians: Carlos Santana slugged his sixth career grand slam and the host Guardians beat the Reds 11-2, snapping the Reds’ five-game win streak and denying manager Terry Francona a season sweep of his former team. Santana’s third-inning slam came on the 15th anniversary of his major league debut. It was his eighth HR this season and made it 5-0, helping the Guardians salvage the finale of this three-game series. Francona’s Reds swept the Guardians in three games in Cincinnati last month. The Guardians had five straight hits to open a four-run sixth for a nine-run lead, including a three-run HR by Lane Thomas. Their 11 runs were a season high. Thomas’ HR was his first this season after returning from the IL this week. He had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice. José Ramírez hit an RBI double to extend his career-long on-base streak to 37 games, the longest active streak in the majors. He has a hit in 11 straight games. Logan Allen (4-4) went six innings and gave up solo HRs to Elly De La Cruz and TJ Friedl. He struck out six.
