The New York Knicks hired former Warriors assistant Mike Brown as their next head coach on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau.
The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years.
They decided to fire Thibodeau despite that and eventually picked Brown, who wasn’t out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season.
The Knicks liked Brown’s experience working as an assistant on teams that have won four NBA championships — two more than the Knicks franchise has won.
“Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization,” Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement. “His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans.”
Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023 — their first appearance since 2006 — and was voted the Coach of the Year. He also won the award in Cleveland, where he led the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals.
He was on San Antonio’s bench when the Spurs won the 2023 NBA title and was with the Warriors for their 2017, ’18 and ’22 championships, including going 12-0 as the acting head coach during the 2017 postseason when Steve Kerr was sidelined with a back injury.
Brown is 454-304 in 11 seasons, winning at least 45 games in seven of them.
He will take over a Knicks team with championship potential. The Knicks won at least 50 games in each of the last two seasons and knocked off 2024 champion Boston before falling to Indiana in six games in the East finals.
BIG DEAL FOR BANCHERO
Paolo Banchero has checked a lot of boxes since joining the Orlando Magic. Won rookie of the year, been an All-Star, helped the team to the playoffs twice.
And now, the Magic are betting on there being more — much more.
Banchero has signed the richest contract in Magic history, the team announced Monday night. The five-year extension is worth $239 million and could reach about $287 million should he become eligible for a supermax deal, a person with knowledge of the agreement said.
The agreement means the Magic have four players — Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and the newly acquired Desmond Bane — under contract for the next four seasons.
Banchero was the rookie of the year in 2022-23, living up to his billing after being the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He was an All-Star in his second season and was well on his way to that again last season before an early-season oblique injury.
He finished the season averaging 25.9 points and 7.5 rebounds, both career highs, and led the Magic to the playoffs for a second consecutive year.
LOWRY STAYING PUT
Veteran guard Kyle Lowry re-signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as he embarks on what will be his 20th season in the league.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team.
A Philadelphia native, the 39-year-old Lowry played in 35 games last season for the 76ers. He averaged 3.9 points and 2.7 assists.
Lowry was the 24th overall pick out of Villanova by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2006 draft. He’s a six-time All-Star who’s played in 1,173 career games with Memphis, Houston, Toronto, Miami and the Sixers. He helped the Raptors win the NBA title in 2019 when his coach was current Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse.
