San Jose native Naomi Girma is headed overseas for a record-setting price.

London-based club Chelsea is paying the San Diego Wave $1.1 million for Girma’s transfer.

She requested the transfer to the English side, where she can make far more than the $200,000 to $500,000 top players make in the NWSL, per the San Diego Union-Tribune.

French powerhouse Lyon also had an interest in Girma and was willing to part with close to $1 million as well, per The Athletic.

She is joining the best team in England, as Chelsea is currently top of the Women’s Super League table and has won 10 of 11 matches this season.

Girma grew up in San Jose and attended Pioneer High School before becoming a standout at Stanford. She was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NWSL draft and has won the league’s defender of the year award in each of her first two seasons.

The center back dominated the international stage during the United States national team’s run last summer to winning an Olympic gold medal.

“It’s just such a joy to be able to watch her, and I can say — without hyperbole — that she is the best center back in the world,” former USWNT star Danielle Slaton told the Bay Area News Group during the Olympic tournament.

Girma’s national team coach, Emma Hayes, had even higher praise for the exceptional defender.

“She’s the best defender I’ve ever seen,” Hayes said.

Bay FC’s schedule released >> Bay FC will have several chances to impress a national audience in its second season of existence.

The women’s soccer club will play host to the defending league champion Orlando Pride on June 13 in a match that will be shown on Prime Video.

The club’s 2025 schedule was revealed on Wednesday, with matches running from March 15 to Nov. 2.

Bay FC’s season opens on the road at Utah Royals. A week later, Bay FC will have its home opener against Racing Louisville before facing off with Washington Spirit.

Washington, led by United States national team star Trinity Rodman, eliminated Bay FC in last season’s NWSL playoffs.

The next week brings more national team star power, when Mallory Swanson’s Chicago Stars FC travel to PayPal Park for a showdown with Bay FC.

Bay Area fans hoping to see hometown hero Girma during a home game against San Diego on Aug. 16 will no longer have that opportunity. Her record-breaking move to English powerhouse Chelsea was announced on Wednesday.

The 13 home and 13 road regular-season games aren’t the only matches Bay FC will play this season. The regular season will be put on pause from June 23 until Aug. 2, which is when confederation competitions such as the UEFA women’s EURO and Copa America Femenina take place.

NWSL teams can still play against other professional clubs, including international opponents, during that time.

Bay FC will look to build upon a successful first season in which the club won 11 matches, had one draw and lost 14 while making the playoffs as a seventh seed.

The South Bay franchise is expected to return attacking duo Racheal Kundananji and Asisat Oshoala, who combined for 13 goals last season.

The club’s roster is also undergoing changes, with a notable subtraction being Jen Beattie, who retired after an 18-year pro career. Bay FC also added Cal alum Karlie Lema and former All-American Taylor Huff this offseason.
