




James Logan wrestler Mikayla Garcia is the Bay Area News Group’s girls athlete of the week and Sequoia soccer player Daniel Schembri is the boys athlete of the week for Feb. 13-18.
In the girls poll, Garcia received 15,469 votes (37.40%), finishing ahead of Evergreen Valley wrestler Katianna Martinez’s 8,874 votes (21.45%). Santa Clara basketball player Mialani Talalele finished third.
Garcia, a sophomore, won her division’s NCS championship for the second year in a row. Now in the 111-pound class, Garcia had won the 106 class in 2022. She pinned her opponent in 3:51.
In the boys poll, Schembri received 19,804 votes (45.64%), finishing ahead of Granada basketball player Andrew McKeever’s 16,907 votes (38.96%). Prospect basketball playerTommy Lewit finished third.
Schembri, a senior, scored the only goal off an assist from Leimana Makasini as third-seeded Sequoia edged sixth-seeded Hollister 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the CCS Division I playoffs. Schembri has 11 goals and seven assists this season.
