The table was set time and again, but River Plate came away hungry.

With an opportunity to move to the top of the table in Group E, River Plate was held scoreless by Monterrey in a 0-0 draw late Saturday night in the FIFA Club World Cup at the Rose Bowl.

“We felt like we should’ve won (and) that we were better,” River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo said. “There’s a bitter taste from not getting the victory.”

Franco Mastantuono had a pair of shots on goal and was named man of the match for River Plate.

“It was quite an even game,” Mastantuano said. “(Monterrey) is one of the strongest teams in the group. The moment was fun but we ended in a draw.”

The Argentine giants now have four points after two matches and are tied with Inter Milan for first place heading into their matchup on the third and final day of group play.

“We need to go out there and win,” Mastantuono said. “We must win. It’s something we need to go out and do. We know it’s a difficult opponent but it’s clear what we will try to do.”

It’s the second consecutive draw for Monterrey, which drew 1-1 against Inter Milan in its opener and is alone in third place on two points.

The Rayados play Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds in the final Club World Cup match at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday night.

“If someone thinks it’ll be easy, just look at the J-League,” Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent said. “We need to win the next one, and if we win we have many options to qualify for the next stage.”

Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrade made eight saves to keep the game even and punched aside a blasted free kick from Mastantuono in the 27th minute.

“We had clear goal-scoring situations,” Mastantuono said. “If we managed to score there the game would have opened up in our favor, but we take a draw.”

River Plate missed on two close-range opportunities in first-half stoppage time, with Lucas Martinez missing wide with a volley from 6 yards away as the match remained scoreless at halftime.

The physical match featured 38 fouls and nine yellow cards.

Juventus FC 4, Wydad AC 1: Kenan Yildiz scored two goals on Sunday in Philadelphia as Juventus clinched a spot in the elimination round.

Juventus took the lead in the sixth minute as defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil deflected a shot attempt by Yildiz into the back of Wydad’s net. Ten minutes later, Yildiz showed up again in front of the 31,975 at Lincoln Financial Field to double Juventus’ lead with a powerful volley into the top right corner.

Thembinkosi Lorch scored in the 25th minute for Wydad.

Following the goal, the referee paused the match after Wydad’s supporters threw three flares onto the field and set off red and black smoke in the stands that affected visibility on the field. The four-minute pause also served as a hydration break for the players as temperatures in Philadelphia reached 89 degrees in the first half.

With his second goal of the game, Yildiz secured the win for Juventus in the 69th minute converting a penalty kick in stoppage time.

Real Madrid 3, Pachuca 1: Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler scored first-half goals and short-handed Real Madrid bounced back from a disappointing performance in its CWC opener with the win on Sunday in front of 70,248 spectators at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

Seven minutes in, defender Raul Asencio received a red card, forcing Real Madrid to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

It hardly mattered as Madrid dominated the Mexican club the rest of the way to give Xabi Alonso his first win as coach of the Spanish power.

Bellingham got Madrid on the board in the 35th minute. Eight minutes later, Güler made it 2-0 when he delivered a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner. Federico Valverde put the final touches on the win in the second half with a sliding right-footed shot off an assist from Brahim Díaz.

Goalkeeper Thabaut Courtois had 10 saves but Elías Montiel ended the shutout bid in the 80th minute for Pachuca.

Gustavo Nonato Santana stopped a clearance attempt near the top of the penalty area and tapped a shot inside the right post in the 66th minute to tie the score 2-2.

Da Silva França capped the scoring in the second minute of stoppage time.

Fluminense is tied with Borussia Dortmund atop Group F and can clinch a berth in the knockout round with win or a draw against the Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday. Ulsan from South Korea, which plays Dortmund on Wednesday, was eliminated from reaching the knockout round.
