



When the CIF Southern Section swimming finals are contested Thursday through Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College, Blair senior Ella Lesnever will be looking to finish as a double winner for the second consecutive season, as well as finishing a brilliant high school career.
Lesnever, who was the 2024 San Gabriel Valley girls swimmer of the year, is hoping to be a repeat winner in the 50 and 100 freestyle girls races in Division 4. The finals start Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Division 2 and 3 finals are on Friday and Division 1 is on Saturday.
Lesnever, who is a University of Wyoming commit, set the Division 4 meet record in the 100 freestyle last year, winning in 50.25 seconds.
She also reached the 100 freestyle finals at the CIF State championships, where she finished seventh overall.
Lesnever won the Rio Hondo League title in the 100 free in 50.42, and she’s looking for an even better time Thursday.
Lesnever is also going for a second straight Division 4 title in the 50 freestyle. She won last year’s 50 free in 23.25, which was not far off the meet record of 23.11. Lesnever qualified this year with the best mark of 23.41 at the Rio Hondo League finals.
Lesnever is going for her fourth straight CIF-SS crown in the 50. After winning as a freshman in Division 4, she won the title in Division 3 her sophomore year, and the Vikings have been in D4 the past two seasons.
“She’s definitely trying to break the meet record in the 50 and break her own record in the 100,” Blair coach Emilio Lopez said. “I think her chances are pretty good. She’s been pretty consistent the whole season and has been gearing towards this. She’s been doing this for a lot of years and is dedicated to the sport.”
Muir freshman Rosio Valencia won the Pacific League title in the girls 200 medley and has the top qualifying mark of 2:14.03 heading to Thursday’s Division 4 finals. Valencia also hopes to medal in the breaststroke, where she has the third-best qualifying mark of 1:09.12.
Maranatha junior Elijah Redson enters the 100 backstroke as the favorite with a top qualifying mark of 52.37, which is more than a second faster than the next best mark.
Rosemead’s Austin Ly is one to watch in the boys 100 breaststroke with a top qualifying mark of 1:03.33.
Marshall junior Finnagan Slattery is also hoping to medal in the D4 finals in the boys 200 medley. Slattery has the third-best qualifying mark at 2:03.83.
Sierra Vista senior Steven Olvera is hoping to medal in the boys 500 free after posting the third-best qualifying time of 4:56.98.
DIVISION 2
The girls 200 freestyle in Division 2 will be hotly contested with with three area athletes competing for medals.
La Cañada’s Meredith O’Grady has the top qualifying mark at 1:49.52. Arcadia’s Sophia Xu is next with a time of 1:49.96 and La Cañada’s Mia Bugarin has the third best time of 1:51.84.
Burgarin could double medal, as she has the top qualifying mark in the 500 free (4:53.55).
O’Grady has the second-best qualifying mark in the 100 free and Xu could potentially double medal with the second best qualifying time in the 100 butterfly.
Rowland’s Kyle Tsuei could potentially be a double winner. Tsuei owns the top qualifying time in the 50 free (20.67) and top qualifying mark in the 100 backstroke (49.11.
Rowland’s Anthony Zhang could reach the top of the podium. He has the top qualifying mark in the 500 free (4:33.21).
Flintridge Prep’s Henry Yang has the top qualifying mark in the boys 200 medley in 1:53.78
DIVISION 3
La Mirada’s Lincoln Jones is the favorite in the 200 medley with a top qualifying mark of 1:52.00. He also hopes to medal in the 500 free.
DIVISION 1
Flintridge Prep’s Addie Gish is one of the favorites in the girls 200 freestyle with the second-best qualifying time of 1:48.30. Gish also has the fourth-best mark in the 500 free.
San Marino’s Liam Thomas is hoping to medal in the 100 free. He also has the fourth-best qualifying mark in the 500 free.
