Harbor High’s girls volleyball team unveiled its 2023 Central Coast Section championship banner in its first home match of the season Thursday, and added to its feel-good evening with a 26-28, 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 win over Soquel in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match.

Senior outside hitter Maren O’Farrell 17 kills and 16 digs for the Pirates. Senior middle blocker Sabine Kemos had 15 kills, and senior outside hitter Isla Johnson had 13 kills. Senior setter Sandy Enriquez 29 assists and 10 digs.

Jillian Winterburn had 10 kills for Soquel. Claire Petersen had eight kills, 17 digs, and three aces. Katy Eze had seven kills. Gianna Audisio had 13 digs, Mia Riddle had 12 assists and 12 digs, and Gemma Reyes had 11 digs. Lily Juarez-Sapone made 18 assists.

Harbor (3-5, 2-0) plays at Salinas on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Soquel (3-6, 1-1) plays in the Hillsdale Tournament in San Mateo on Saturday.

At Santa Cruz 3, Scotts Valley 2 >> The Cardinals prevailed 25-23, 16-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-8 over the Falcons in the teams’ SCCAL match Thursday.

Natalie Monroe had 14 kills for the Cardinals (4-3, 2-0). Shelby Leonardich had six kills and 22 digs. Haisley Flanagan made seven kills and Inde Snell made six. Maggie Redwine had 13 digs and one ace. Kelaiah Wynn had four kills, one ace, and two blocks, and Clara Bay Marinelli Watkins had three kills and one block.

“It was a hard-fought battle,” Cardinals coach Caroline Nicodemus said. “Santa Cruz High is facing the tragic loss of one of our students, an athlete, and a friend of many of the girls on our team. I know that they held such loss in their heart last night and I was proud that they honored him with a commitment to fight as a team.”

Senior outside hitter Ava Morrison had six aces, 23 kills, and 13 digs for the Falcons (5-2, 0-1). Junior outside hitter Hayden Smith had 20 kills, 18 digs, and three blocks. Junior opposite Aila Papadopoulos had 14 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Maddie Pipal served five aces.

On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Scotts Valley plays at Soquel, and Santa Cruz plays at Aptos.

New SCCAL start times >> SCCAL volleyball coaches voted to move up the start times of all its league matches for the remainder of the season. Freshman matches will begin at 4 p.m., junior-varsity at 5 p.m., and varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Boys cross country

At Santa Cruz 22 Scotts Valley 45 >> The Cardinals’ Eli Fitchen-Young (11:05.4) cruised to the individual win Thursday.

The Falcons’ Aaron Weiss (11:53.4) took second, and the Cardinals’ Emiliano Villarreal (12:09.9) took third.

SLV 15, at Harbor 60 >> SLV senior Cian Ryan took first in 17:36 in the 2.97-mile race on Thursday.

Sophomore Jonathan Santi (17:51), junior Daniel Peabody (18:04), freshman Charlie Kressman (18:50), and freshman Lukas Reynolds (19:00) also scored for the Cougars.

Junior Hans Hagge (19:07) took seventh and led Mount Madonna, and junior Oliver Willet (19:25) took eighth and led Harbor.

Cross Town Classic >> Kirby junior Mason Vergho took first place out of 28 runners at the 2.76-mile Cross Town Classic at Wilder Ranch on Thursday. He finished in 16:19.

Pacific Collegiate senior Roark Anderson took second in 16:26 and sophomore teammate Jude Holmlund (17:02) took third.

Ceiba senior Anthony Toriz (17:34) took fourth, and Kirby freshman Manuel Florean (17:52) took sixth.

Kirby (30 points) won the race, Pacific Collegiate (46) was second, and Anzar (56) was third.

Girls cross country

Santa Cruz 25 Scotts Valley 30 >> The Falcons’ Ava Decleve (13:45.4) edged the Cardinals’ Heidi Green (13:45.8) for the individual win Thursday. The Cardinals’ Isla Roak (13:55.7) took third.

SLV 15, at Harbor 58 >> SLV freshman Skyla Leggett took first in 20:00 in the 2.97-mile race on Thursday.

Senior Naomi Seastrom (20:10), senior Ruby Evans (20:12), sophomore Beth Gabrielson (20:12), and freshman Stella Sutcliffe (21:19) also scored for the Cougars.

Sophomore Kikoleiani Horne tok seventh and led the Pirates (21:32).

Cross Town Classic >> PCS freshman Alice Gilbert-King took second place in 22:21 at the 2.76-mile Cross Town Classic at Wilder Ranch on Thursday.

Anzar sophomore Isabella Briceno-Nicholson won in 19:44. Ceiba junior Carimey Maldonado took third in 22:45.

Girls tennis

Monte Vista Christian 7, at Oakwood 0 >> Sofia Moore, Ana Borges, Sophia Sheridan, and Cloe Morrow earned singles wins in straight sets, and the Mustangs earned a sweep Thursday.

Siena Liddicoat and Shaeleen Koch, Alexa Contreras and Andrea Chamberland, and Irena Covarrubias and Madison Bergman earned doubles wins in straight sets.

MVC (2-1) hosts Santa Cruz in a nonleague match Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Women’s soccer

At Pomona-Pitzer 3, UC Santa Cruz 0 >> The Banana Slugs were shut out by the No. 11 Sagehens on Thursday night.

Ella Endo scored in the third minute, Hannah Hong scored her third goal of the season in the 76th minute, and Isla Burch scored three minutes later.

Mia Linville made three saves for UCSC; Patricia DePalma made four saves for the Sagehens (3-0-1).

UCSC (2-2-2) plays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (1-0-2) in Claremont on Saturday at 11 a.m.
