Santa Cruz’s Adam Bartlett advanced from his opening heat at the World Surf League’s SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach, a Junior Tour 1,000-point event, on Tuesday.

Bartlett, a member of Team USA’s U18 Junior National Team, took second place in Heat 2 of the Round of 48, which featured 1- to 4-foot waves. He posted a two-wave total score of 10.16 in the 20-minute heat.

Carl Burger (10.24) of Flagler Beach, Florida, took first and also advanced. Gabriel Griffin (9.76) of Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida, took third and was eliminated, as was Malibu’s Matteo Wander (6.10), who took fourth.

Bartlett next competes in Heat 1 of the Round of 32 against Manhattan Beach’s Kai Kushner, San Clemente’s David Gibson, and Nadav Attar of Israel.

In the women’s Junior Tour competition, Santa Cruz’s Riviera Hunter (7.26) took third in Heat 3 of the Round of 32 and was eliminated. She finished behind Vela Mattive (11.17) of Santa Barbara and Mia Moore (9.40) of Laguna Beach. Alana Lopez of Daytona Beach, Florida, was injured and took fourth.

Boys basketball

Santa Cruz 74, University (S.F.) 70 >> Junior forward DeMarco Hunter had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and the Cardinals won their MLK Classic game at Merritt College in Oakland on Monday.

“It was a really good game, back and forth,” Cardinals coach Lawan Milhouse said. “We fell down by eight, handled the adversity and fought back. Great way to celebrate MLK day. Everyone else in league is off, but we had a game to play. Good, tough nonleague battle.”

Senior guard Mosiah Cumberbatch had 17 points, six assists, and three rebounds for the Cardinals. Sophomore Kaden Mirtz had 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore guard LJ Legan had 13 points.

Cumberbatch, who scored 19 points in an overtime win over Soquel on Friday, has produced 15-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

“Mosiah is finally coming into the role of being a senior captain, leading on the court and off,” Milhouse said. “He’s also trusting in himself and his abilities. He can hoop and it’s about time he figured it out. He has been ballln’ lately.”

Junior guard Lucas Lau scored a game-high 31 points for the Red Devils (11-8). Senior forward Jason Morris added 12 points.

Santa Cruz (8-8, 2-0) was scheduled to host Scotts Valley (7-9, 1-1) on Tuesday night, after the Sentinel went to press, and plays at Aptos (12-4, 2-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Girls basketball

Pacific Collegiate 55, at Santa Catalina 15 >> Sophomore forward Kat Buckley scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Pumas win their Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division game on Monday.

Junior guard Julia Guth had 11 points and three assists for the Pumas (7-6, 3-2).

Freshman Genavieve Keefe added eight points and four rebounds, and senior guard Addie Payne had six points, nine assists, and three blocks.

PCS hosts Greenfield (3-7, 3-2) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
