


Naeher makes 3 saves in shootout as U.S. edges Canada to secure title
COLUMBUS, Ohio>> Alyssa Naeher made three saves in a penalty shootout and converted her own attempt to lead the United States past Canada in the final of the SheBelieves Cup, the Americans’ fifth straight title in the event. The U.S. won the shootout 5-4 after the rivals played to a 2-2 draw in regulation.
Emily Fox scored the decisive goal in the seventh round of the shootout after Naeher stopped Evelyne Viens. Sophia Smith scored both U.S. goals. Her first tied the game at 1-all in the 50th minute. Her second put the Americans ahead 2-1 in the 68th off a cross from Trinity Rodman.
Judged: Morant was acting in self-defense during fight
MEMPHIS, Tenn.>> A Tennessee judge has ruled that Ja Morant acted in self-defense when a teenager accused the two-time NBA All-Star of punching him during a pickup game at the home of the Memphis Grizzlies guard’s parents in 2022. The judge cited Tennessee law on when the issue of self-defense can be raised.
The judge wrote in a ruling issued Monday that Morant has the presumption of civil immunity. Joshua Holloway accused Morant of assaulting him when he was 17. Holloway now plays for Samford University. The judge wrote in her ruling that Holloway was the only provocateur that day, with everyone else just wanting to play basketball.
VanDerveer retires as Stanford women’s coach
stanford, calif.>> Tara VanDerveer, the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history, announced her retirement after 38 seasons leading the Stanford women’s team and 45 years overall.
The 70-year-old surpassed Mike Krzyzewski for the wins record in January. The Hall of Famer departs with 1,216 victories at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford.
As has been the plan for years, top Cardinal assistant Kate Paye is set to take over the program, and Stanford said in a statement that negotiations with Paye are underway. Paye played for VanDerveer from 1991-95 and has coached on her staff for 17 years.
Clark wins Wooden Award as best player in the nation
LOS ANGELES>> Iowa’s Caitlin Clark won the John R. Wooden Award for the second straight year as the nation’s top women’s college basketball player. The other finalists were Cameron Brink of Stanford, Paige Bueckers of UConn and freshmen Hannah Hidalgo of Notre Dame and JuJu Watkins of Southern California.
McDavid is day to day with injury, may miss next game
EDMONTON, Alberta>> Edmonton captain Connor McDavid is day to day with a lower-body injury and could miss the Oilers’ next game against defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas.
Coach Kris Knoblauch said he’ll speak with the three-time NHL MVP on Wednesday before the team decided whether McDavid would play that night against the Golden Knights. McDavid ranks third in the league in scoring with 130 points.
Judge orders superfan “ChiefsAholic” to pay $10.8M to bank teller
OKLAHOMA CITY>> An Oklahoma judge is ordering a Kansas City Chiefs superfan known as “ChiefsAholic” who admitted to robbing multiple banks to pay $10.8 million to a bank teller he threatened with a gun.
