History

More history of the Bidwell Municipal Golf Course: Enterprise, June 4, 1921: “Irwin makes low score on links: The lowest individual score ever made officially on the Chico municipal links was turned in by D.D. (Doug) Irwin Wednesday afternoon, when he negotiated the nine holes in 39. He learned the game in Chicago under the tutelage of Frank M. Waugh, one of the best know professional golfers in the mid-west. He made the 1-2-3-4 holes in par. Hole No. 3 is an especially difficult one and is 383 yards. Irwin is the ‘dark horse’ of the first annual handicap tournament which will start Sunday, June 5, for which there are 38 entries already listed. T.W. Haley joined the “Hole-in-One” club on the second green recently when he holed a 160-yard drive. Jay Wightman joined the same club about two months ago.

“Other low scores on the local links for the nine holes are: Mayor, S.A. (Sherman) Reynolds, 41; Al Jolson who played on the local course while here with “Sinbad,” 40; F.A. (Frank) Peterson, 43, and George Sperry, 44.”
