The Bulls continued to revamp their roster Tuesday by making a surprising splash in free agency.

They reportedly agreed to sign free-agent wing DeMar DeRozan to a three-year, $85 million contract. To complete the sign-and-trade deal, the Bulls will send Thad Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a 2025 first-round pick and second-round picks in 2022 and 2025 to the San Antonio Spurs, according to multiple reports.

The Bulls also reportedly agreed to a deal with free-agent center Tony Bradley on Wednesday, adding depth to their frontcourt.

While Monday’s move for Lonzo Ball had been telegraphed for weeks, the Bulls operated much more stealthily to pull off DeRozan’s addition.

DeRozan, a four-time All-Star who turns 32 on Saturday, averaged 21.6 points and 6.9 assists with the Spurs in 2020-21 and has scored at least 20 points per game in the last eight seasons.

As a secondary creator and third scoring option, DeRozan gives the Bulls additional offensive firepower to pair with Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, who played with DeRozan at USC during the 2008-09 season.

As with the additions of Ball and guard Alex Caruso on Monday, the DeRozan deal cannot be officially completed or announced until the moratorium period ends Friday.

Unlike those moves the Bulls made at the start of free agency to revamp their backcourt, DeRozan does not present the tidiest fit. He is not a 3-point shooter (25.7% last season on 1.2 attempts per game), has limits defensively and will have to adjust to playing without the ball more frequently.

The Bulls were thin on the wings last season, especially after the trade deadline, so DeRozan should provide an instant upgrade. He does most of his scoring in the midrange, but he also has success getting to the rim — his 7.2 free-throw attempts per game last season would have led the Bulls.

DeRozan has a connection to Bulls general manager Marc Eversley, who was the Toronto Raptors assistant GM at the start of DeRozan’s career.

To acquire DeRozan, however, the Bulls had to pay a hefty price.

His $85 million contract is fully guaranteed, and DeRozan, while still a solid player, has not made an All-Star team since 2017-18. Plus, the Bulls had to ship out another first-round pick to acquire him. They already traded their 2021 and 2023 first-round picks to the Orlando Magic in the deadline deal for Vucevic in March, meaning the earliest they can trade this pick is 2025.

Young, 33, is coming off an excellent season in which he averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and a career-high 4.3 assists and shot 56% from the field.

Bulls executive vice president Arturas Karnišovas has acted aggressively to overhaul the roster. Only two players — LaVine and Coby White — remain under contract from the team he inherited after the 2019-20 season, with Lauri Markkanen still unsigned as a restricted free agent.
