MARINA >> Night work is scheduled for Thursday on the Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project, and the reopening of Preston Drive, as well as a new traffic configuration, is expected Friday, as construction continues to transform 1.7 miles of Imjin Parkway in Marina.

Imjin Parkway will be closed from Imjin Road to Reservation Road from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., to accommodate the scheduled night work Thursday.

The Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project is a two-year effort to widen and increase safety on an artery linking the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas Valley for about 30,000 daily motorists through the city of Marina. Construction began Feb. 12 and is anticipated to complete by the end of June 2026.

The city of Marina is the lead agency for the project, which is also the second regional Transportation Agency for Monterey County Measure X project to be built.During the night work scheduled for Thursday, Abrams Drive will remain open. The work will involve relocating existing concrete barrier rail sections, using trucks and small lift equipment, and striping for the new traffic lanes, according to TAMC.

The contractor will need to have lighting for the operations but will make every effort to aim lighting away from residences.

This work will move traffic on Reservation Road to the new roadway section on Imjin Parkway between Reservation Road and Preston Drive.

This will also re-open Preston Drive and the transition segment west of Preston Drive that will move traffic back to the existing traffic lanes before the signal at Abrams. In addition, Marina Heights Drive will close to all vehicles at Imjin Parkway. This closure will allow for the construction of half of the new roundabout and the adjacent roadway segments at Marina Heights Drive.

TAMC and the city of Marina reminds motorists to be alert for new lane configurations on Imjin Parkway between Reservation Road and the transition segment west of Preston Drive. The enforceable speed limit through the construction zone is 25 mph.

Until Nov. 29, day work on the Imjin Parkway project will see the reopening of Preston Drive and the closure of Marina Heights Drive, continued installation of streetlight and fiber optic conduit, and irrigation service lines between Marina Heights Drive and Imjin Road.

The phase one drainage facilities for bioswale improvements will continue, along with the grading and installing of base material for phase one roadway between Marina Heights Drive and Imjin Road, prepping and spraying of hydroseeding material on slopes between Reservation Road and Preston Drive including areas along Preston Drive, and between Abrams and Marina Heights drives.

The forming of curbs, gutters and sidewalks at Marina Heights Drive and Imjin Road will continue, as will the environmental monitoring of contractor activities job wide.

The Imjin Parkway Widening and Roundabout Project affects 1.7 miles of Imjin Parkway from Reservation Road to Imjin Road and will include the construction of four roundabouts and increase the stretch of roadway to four lanes.

Upon completion of the project, the Widening and Roundabout Project will provide transit and pedestrian improvements, add on-street buffered bike lanes, stormwater treatment areas, retaining walls and a sound wall.

The improvements will benefit commuters who travel through the corridor, as well as those who live along Imjin Parkway at Cal State Monterey Bay and the neighboring homes in Marina Heights, Sea Haven and Preston Park.
