Monterey
Commander Marvin M. Quaid, USN (Ret.) passed away Monday, December 16, 2024 in Monterey.
He was born in Galveston, Texas, on May 12, 1929. After graduating High School, he joined the Navy and was sent to Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas, where her met his future wife, Margaret Anne Klaus. He completed flight training in early 1950 and was aveteran of the Korean War. During his service in the Navy, he was an attack pilot flying from and serving on various aircraft carriers.
He attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and was awarded aMaster of Science degree in 1962. He served as an Associate Professor at the US Naval Academy.
During the Vietnam War he was the commanding officer of Attack Squadron 212, the first Navy unit to employ TV guided bombs. During his service, Cdr. Quaid flew 323 combat missions. His decorations include the Silver Star Medal, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star, twenty-nine Air Medals, and three Navy Commendation Medals with Combat Device.
After retiring from the Navy Cdr. Quaid worked for a few years in San Francisco and in 1976 he became the Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District where he employed until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Monterey Peninsula Kiwanis for many years.
An avid lifelong aviator, he and friends restored three WWII trainer aircraft and flew them regularly. He was a member of the North American Trainer Assoc. and the Commemorative Air Force. He flew and showed his restored planes in many air shows.
He was preceded in death by his wife of66years, Margaret.
He is survived by his son Joel of Santa Barbara, his son Jefferey of Paso Robles, daughter Shelley of Bonney Lake, WA, and daughter Brenda of Chico. Five grandchildren also survive him.
A gathering at 9:30 am Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Mission Mortuary & Memorial Park, 450 Camino El Estero in Monterey will be followed by an 11:00 am Committal service at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey.
