SANTA CRUZ >> Harbor High’s girls volleyball team was perfect in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action last season. It was so rewarding, the veteran Pirates were intent on accomplishing the feat again.
Maren O’Farrell made 11 kills, and the Pirates swept visiting Scotts Valley 25-16, 25-14, 25-10 to repeat as the SCCAL Tournament champion on Wednesday night.
The dominant Pirates repeated as both the regular season and tournament champ — and were unbeaten in doing so.
“We’re really proud of ourselves,” Harbor’s Isla Johnson said. “For us 10 seniors, that was our goal for forever. After last year, we were motivated to do it again.”
It was Scotts Valley’s first appearance in the tournament final.
Johnson added seven kills for the Pirates (21-9) and Cecile Novembre put down six. In the middle, Sabine Kemos had seven kills and Jocelyn Ruelas contributed five. Holly Rejfir and Gianna Fanara also were forces up front.
“Our defense was great,” Sabine Kemos said. “Zoe (Kemos) and Grace (Stryker) held down the back row.”
Scotts Valley (19-10) was paced by Hayden Smith with six kills and Ava Morrison and Aila Papadopoulos with four kills each. The Falcons were coming off an upset sweep of Soquel in the semifinals on Tuesday.“Reaching the final says a lot about our young team,” Scotts Valley coach and alum Mikayla Fish said. “We only have one senior. This shows the tenacity of this group. They try really hard to play to the level of other team. I think we surprised a lot of people this year.”
Both teams will continue play in the Central Coast Section playoffs, which kick off on Saturday. The seeding meeting takes place Thursday in San Jose.
“This is amazing,” Harbor coach Matt Schutz said. “We have a group of kids that are pretty athletic and really love playing volleyball and they love each other. We’re just playing really well and we’re peaking at the right time. Our serve receive was great, our blocking has improved, we served tough and we ran our middles well.”
The Falcons were within reach in the first set until Harbor’s five-point run opened things up at 21-11. In the surge, Dylan Schutz served two aces, Johnson drilled a rocket down the seam and Ruelas scored from the middle.
Scotts Valley regrouped and led early in the second set. Again, Harbor put together a long run and the Falcons could not side out. A 9-1 charge built a comfortable margin, with O’Farrell and Fanara delivering two kills each. Scotts Valley was hindered by a hand injury to Makayla McDonnell in the first set, though she tried to play through it, and an ankle injury that sidelined middle Harlan Hennager in the second set.
In the third set, a six-point run with Johnson at the serving stripe produced a 15-5 lead. She snuck an ace down the sideline and O’Farrell was on fire with two big blasts for kills. Setters Sandy Enriquez and Schutz were moving the ball around and the Falcons could not concentrate the block in any one place. SV setter Ava Dumesny tried to find success with her offense and Smith had several great hits but Harbor’s defense was gritty as always.
Fish’s squad competed in the CCS playoffs last year, falling in a competitive Division IV opener in four sets to Harker. She indicated her goal this year is to make it to the second round.
For Harbor, very big goals remain. Last year’s team captured the school’s first CCS volleyball title since 1994. Key wins came in four tight sets over Mercy and a four-set victory over Notre Dame Belmont for the Division IV title.
“We’re trying to take it game by game,” O’Farrell said. “But last year we won CCS and we hope to win again.”
