LOS ALAMITOS — Los Alamitos continues to be in charge of Sunset League boys basketball.
The Griffins clinched the outright league championship Thursday with a 68-58 win over Corona del Mar in a league game at Los Alamitos High.
Los Alamitos is 10-0 with two league games remaining, today at Marina and Tuesday at Fountain Valley. Second-place Edison is 6-4 in league.
It is the third straight league title for the Griffins, who were outright Surf League champions last season and shared the Surf League championship with Edison two seasons ago.
Thursday’s victory moved Los Alamitos’ winning streak in league games to 21. Los Alamitos, No. 4 in the Orange County Top 25, is 18-8 overall.
No. 19 Corona del Mar is 19-7 overall and 5-5 in league. The Sea Kings are tied with Fountain Valley for third place in the seven-team league. The top four teams in seven-team leagues receive guaranteed entry into the CIF Southern Section playoffs that begin Feb. 12.
Griffins senior guard Samori Guyness scored 22 points. Senior forward Trent Minter scored 20 points with three 3-point baskets and nine rebounds.
Los Alamitos also got nine points from senior guard Wes Trevino and six rebounds from junior forward Tyler Lopez.
Corona del Mar senior 6-6 forward Jackson Harlan scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Harlan was All-Orange County first team in water polo this past fall and will play the sport at UC Santa Barbara.
Sophomore guard Maxwell Scott scored 15 points and junior guard Oliver Nakra scored 11 points for the Sea Kings.
Los Alamitos coach Nathan Berger was pleased with the Griffins’ effort from the opening tip.
“We played with a lot of energy at the start,” Berger said. “We did as well as could with Jackson on the glass. He got a couple, but he’s going to get a couple.
“We executed the defensive game plan pretty well tonight. Not as much chaos as we normally do, but we just wanted to contain and force guys to make plays.”
Guyness liked the way the Griffins finished strongly, something that they have failed to do in a few of their losses.
“We closed it out well,” he said. “Usually, we’re not a good second-half team. Usually, when we go into halftime and it’s close we kind of let it go.”
Minter scored the game’s first points on a 3-point basket and the Griffins never trailed from there. They had a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 30-28 lead at halftime.
Guyness scored nine points in the third quarter, including a stretch when he personally outscored Corona del Mar 7-0 with a steal and fast break, a 3-point basket and another fastbreak layup. That led to a 10-0 Los Alamitos run that enabled the Griffins to take a 52-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
Corona del Mar kept battling. Scott made back-to-back 3s to trim the Los Alamitos lead to five points, 57-52, but the Griffins were able to pull away from there.
