Chamber hosts Tuesday candidate forum

The Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce will host a Capitola City Council Candidate Forum from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at City of Capitola Council Chambers, 420 Capitola Ave., Capitola.

Forum will be moderated by former Capitola Mayor Mike Termini.

There are five candidates running for three seats: Enrique Dolmo Jr., Joe Clarke, Alexander Pedersen, Gerry Jensen, Yvette Lopez Brooks. Candidates will have the opportunity to state their vision, priorities and answer questions.

Landfill, transfer station hours to change

Starting Nov. 2, the Buena Vista Landfill and the Ben Lomond Transfer Station will close at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, according to a release from Santa Cruz County.

The closures will help facilitate site safety coordination. No other hours will change. All services, including household waste disposal, will end at 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. For a list of hours, visit dpw.co.santa-cruz.ca.us.

METRO offers free rides on Clean Air Day

Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (METRO), in partnership with Santa Cruz County Chamber of Commerce, has again pledged to participate in California Clean Air Day by offering free fares countywide, including trips on the Highway-17 Express and ParaCruz, on Wednesday.

METRO is offering free fares to the community to encourage the use of public transit as a way to reduce air pollution, which matters more than ever.

METRO would also like to encourage our employees, riders and community members to participate in Clean Air Day by pledging to take action. Joining the pledge takes less than a minute and includes items such as remote meetings, planting a tree or garden, food composting, buying local produce, and of course riding public transit. Fly fishing club to meet Wednesday

The Santa Cruz Fly Fishing club will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday via Zoom and in-person at the Aptos Grange, 2555 Mar Vista Drive, Aptos.

In addition to the general meeting, there will be a presentation by Claire Buchanan of California Trout.

Catamaran journal marks anniversary

The public is invited to celebrate 10 years of the Santa Cruz-based literary journal Catamaran from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Museum of Art & History in Santa Cruz, 705 Front St., Santa Cruz.

Funds raised will support the quarterly Catamaran Literary Reader, which is a curated magazine with art, poetry, fiction and nonfiction work, as well as its community-based programs such as classes, a writing conference, art exhibits, LitChats where authors meet informally with readers to discuss their books, and more formal poetry and fiction readings organized by the nonprofit organization.

The event will offer light appetizers and drinks in the atrium and garden of the museum with a silent auction for you to browse in the tree room on the first floor. This will be followed by a program to honor 10 years of publishing the journal and other literary accomplishments, including a video and literary readings.

Shakespeare club to study ‘Titus Andronicus’

“Titus Andronicus” will be the focus of Saturday Shakespeare Club’s next series of gatherings over a five-week period, at 10 a.m. beginning Oct. 8, via Zoom.

Michael Warren, professor of literature emeritus at UC Santa Cruz, will be the reading group’s first speaker. He served as textual consultant to Shakespeare Santa Cruz during its years on campus and continues this work with Santa Cruz Shakespeare.

Sean Keilen, professor of literature at UCSC, will address the group on Oct. 15. Founding director of the Shakespeare Workshop on campus, Keilen is the author or editor of books and essays about early British literature and the classical tradition in England.

Julia Lupton, who teaches English and comparative literature at UC Irvine, will be the Oct. 22 speaker. She has written extensively on Shakespeare and Renaissance literature and is co-director of the New Swan Shakespeare Center.

Abigail Heald, lecturer in UCSC’s literature department, will be the Oct. 29 speaker. Her focus covers Shakespeare, Renaissance literature, tragedy, gender, literary and film, and has often addressed the Saturday group.
