


Santa Cruz saw Wisconsin’s Stephen Thompson make a pair of free throws with 3.9 seconds left, and the Warriors were edged by the Herd, 112-110, in the teams’ NBA G League game at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday night.
Forward Blake Hinson scored a game-high 34 points for the Warriors (12-12), who dropped into a four-way tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with 10 games left in the regular season.
Two-way forward Braxton Key produced his second straight double-double. He finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds, seven steals, and three blocks. Forward Javan Johnson had 18 points and nine rebounds, and guard Alex Gil-Fernandez rounded out Santa Cruz’s offense with 15 points and three steals off the bench.
Guard James Akinjo led the Herd (13-13) with 31 points and nine assists, and guard Terence Davis followed with 23 points. Forward/center Henry Ellenson collected 16 points and 16 rebounds, and center John Butler Jr. added 12 points and five blocks.
The Warriors play the Mexico City Capitanes (11-13) in their annual Chase Center game in San Francisco on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., before embarking on a seven-game road trip. They return to Santa Cruz and close the regular season with home games against Rip City Remix on March 28 and 29.

At Soquel 6, St. Francis 1 >> Connor Corlett had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and scored a run in the Knights’ nonleague win Friday.
Gabe Virgallito and Kai Estupinian each had a hit, one RBI, and a run scored.
Nash Horton drew a walk and scored a run for the Sharks.
Winning pitcher Dylan Hull scattered five hits over four scoreless innings. He struck out four batters with zero walks.
Evan Dyer gave up three runs, two earned, over four innings and took the loss.
On Tuesday at 4 p.m., Soquel (5-0) hosts Willow Glen (3-1) while St. Francis (2-1) faces host Monterey at Sollecito Park.
At Carmel 9, Aptos 5 >> Nate Garcia had two hits and a run scored in the Mariners’ season opening, nonleague loss on Friday.
Alec Mendoza doubled and had two RBI for the Mariners. Dom Castillo had a hit and scored twice, and Jason Yager had two hits.
Aptos (0-1) played at Los Gatos (4-1) on Saturday after the Sentinel went to press.
At Capuchino 3, Santa Cruz 2 >> The Cardinals led 3-0 through five innings in their nonleague loss, a rematch of the 2024 Central Coast Section Division V championship won by the Mustangs, on Friday.
Santa Cruz (1-1) plays at Archbishop Mitty (3-1), the defending CCS Division I champion, in San Jose on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Terra Nova 8, at SLV 4 >> Junior Brody Egnar had two hits, two stolen bases, and one RBI in the Cougars’ nonleague loss Friday.
The teams were tied at 4-all through four innings.
Senior Jordan Renteria had two hits, including a double, and a run scored for the Cougars.
SLV (0-2) hosts vs Bellarmine (2-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Greenfield 15, at Watsonville 7 >> Gabriel Lara had three hits, including a double, and two RBI in the Wildcatz’s nonleague loss Friday.
The Wildcatz did all of their scoring over the final three innings. Patrick Miller-Brown had two hits, two stolen bases, and scored twice. Rudy Valdez had two hits, including a triple, one RBI, and scored a run. Mathew Silva had two hits and score a run.
Watsonville (0-4) played at Scotts Valley (1-4) on Saturday after the Sentinel went to press.

At Watsonville 6, Alisal 5; 6 inn. >> Mia Espinoza had three hits, including a double, one RBI, and a run scored in the Wildcatz’s win Friday.
Bella Ruiz had two hits and an RBI for the Wildcatz, and Esperanza Sigala had two hits and a run scored. Genisis Hernandez scored twice.
Amelia Martinez earned the complete-game win, and Nevaeh Lopez took the loss.
Watsonville (5-1) plays at Carmel (2-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Carmel 10, at SLV 7 >> Angie Fulkerson hit a double and home run, and had two walks, two RBI, and one run scored in the Cougars’ nonleague loss Friday.
The Cougars were outscored 7-2 over the final three innings.
Grace Purtscher had three hits, two RBI, and a run scored for SLV. Cheyenne Owen had two hits, one walk, RBI, and run scored. Elie Colby had two hits and a run scored.
Kristen Mastin pitched four innings and earned the win. Purtscher pitched two innings and took the loss.

Santa Clara 6, at MVC 5 >> The Mustangs trailed 5-0 after half an inning, rallied to knot the score in the third, but gave up the decisive run in the top of the seventh on Friday.
Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had three hits, three stolen bases, and scored twice for the Mustangs. Ava Alvarado and Isabel Piccini both doubled and scored a run. Juliana Lopez had a hit and run scored, and Addie Boles had a hit and one RBI.
Harper Whitby suffered a complete-game loss. Freshman Rylan Morales pitched five innings and picked up the win.
MVC (3-2) hosts Pajaro Valley (0-2) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
College softball
Mendocino 7, Cabrillo 1 >> Madi Tara hit an RBI triple to drive in Charileen Pauneto in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Seahawks lost their nonconference game Friday.
Bella Fromel had a walk, hit, and stolen base for the Seahawks. Tara also had a steal.
Tatianna Colegrove earned the complete-game win, and Rachel Hafer pitched 1/3 of an inning and took the loss.
Cabrillo (2-15-1) hosted Siskiyous (2-8) in a doubleheader on Saturday after the Sentinel went to press.
Women’s tennis
UCSC earns DH split >> The Banana Slugs beat Mary Washington 4-2, and lost to host Redlands 6-1 in their doubleheader on Friday.
UCSC (4-3) played Sewanee (3-4) at Redlands on Saturday after the Sentinel went to press.
Boys volleyball
At Harbor 3, Monterey 2 >> Junior Cooper Lastition had 22 kills, five digs, and two blocks, and the Pirates pulled off a reverse sweep in their 26-28, 23-25, 25-11, 25-13, 16-14 nonleague win Thursday night.
Junior Josh Rejfir had 20 kills, 13 digs, and two aces for the Pirates, and senior Noah Luksich had 18 kills and 21 digs. Sophomore Eddie Weaver had 60 assists and 16 digs.
Senior Abe Schmidt had 21 digs, five assists, and four aces, and junior Luke Wolfenden had five kills and four blocks.
Harbor (8-0) plays at Soquel on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
