Alexis Vega snapped a 19-match scoreless streak in international play with a goal in the 49th minute and defending champion Mexico beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match late Saturday in Glendale, Ariz.

Mexico will face Honduras in the semifinals Wednesday in Santa Clara.

The 27-year-old Vega scored after finding some room to work following a nice pass from Raúl Jimenez. His first shot bounced off goalkeeper Nawaf Alaquidi, but the forward quickly corralled the rebound and sent it through Alaquidi’s legs and into the net.

Vega was initially ruled offside but after review, the goal was allowed and Mexico had a 1-0 lead.

Vega’s goal snapped a scoreless streak in international play that dates back to 2022. It also ended a dry spell for Mexico, which scored for the first time in 166 minutes of play.

Mexico pushed ahead 2-0 in the 81st minute on an own goal by Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Madu. Mexico’s Mateo Chavez sent a crossing pass to Roberto Alvarado, who never made contact with the ball. Instead, it caromed off a defending Madu and into the net.

Honduras 1, Panama 1, Honduras advances on PKs, 5-4: Carlos Pineda scored the decisive penalty shot as Honduras beat Panama in a shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals on Saturday night in Glendale, Arizona. It is the first time Honduras has made the Gold Cup semis since 2013.

Bayern Munich 4, Flamengo 2: Harry Kane scored twice and Bayern Munich capitalized on a quick start in the round of 16 match on Sunday in Miami.

Germany’s premier soccer club regrouped quickly from its only loss of the tournament last week against Benfica, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then holding off Flamengo’s comeback attempt to advance to the quarterfinals.

Bayern Munich will face Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in Atlanta.

Paris Saint-Germain 4, Inter Miami 0: João Neves scored a pair of goals as PSG overwhelmed one of the game’s greatest players, embarrassing Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Sunday in a round of 16 match Sunday in Atlanta.

With Messi facing the team where he spent two seasons before moving to Major League Soccer in the twilight of his stellar career, the European champions quickly erased the Herons’ hopes of pulling off a monumental upset before a crowd of 65,574 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Neves scored his first goal just six minutes into the match, converting a header at the back post off a free kick. The Portuguese midfielder added another in the 39th minute before Inter Miami totally fell apart in the closing stages of the first half, surrendering an own-goal and then watching helplessly as Achraf Hakimi tacked on another in stoppage time to send PSG to the locker room with a four-goal cushion.

It was reminiscent of PSG’s historic 5-0 rout of Inter Milan a month ago in the Champions League final, when the Paris club won its first European title and established itself as the clear favorite heading into the expanded Club World Cup.

Chelsea 4, Benfica 1: Christopher Nkunku scored off a rebound, and Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added insurance goals in extra time as Chelsea advanced in the Round of 16 match late on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C., The match was delayed for two hours due to lightning and took nearly five hours to complete.

Chelsea advances to play Palmeiras in the quarterfinals Friday in Philadelphia.

Nkunku’s tiebreaking goal came in the 108th minute with Benfica playing a man down after Gianluca Prestianni received a red card.

Moisés Caicedo’s shot from the left side of the box was saved in the center of the goal by Anatolii Trubin, but an alert Nkunku was there to bury the deflection.

Reece James scored on a free kick in the 64th minute to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead. Chelsea was called for a handball in stoppage time when the ball hit Malo Gusto’s hand. Angel Di Maria converted the penalty to even the match.

The Portuguese side had a chance to tie it in the 78th minute, but Gianluca Prestianni sent a right-footed shot from the right side of the box just left of the goal.

Palmeiras 1, Botafogo 0: In an all-Brazilian match, Paulinho worked his way between a pair of defenders and rolled a shot into the back of the net in extra time to put Palmeiras into the quarterfinals with a win late Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Palmeiras will face Chelsea next.

Galaxy 1, Earthquakes 1: Marco Reus scored in the 70th minute as the Galaxy earned a draw in the 104th edition of the California Clásico on Saturday night at Stanford.

It was Reus’ first game wearing the captain’s armband for the Galaxy (1-14-5).

Beau Leroux scored in the 16th minute for the Earthquakes.

San Diego 3, Dallas 2: Hirving Lozano tied the score in the 77th minute and Tomás Ángel scored late in stoppage time to lift expansion San Diego (39 points, 12-5-3) to victory Saturday night in Frisco, Texas.

U.S. WOMEN WIN

Izzy Rodriguez scored in her first appearance for the national team and the United States shut out Ireland 4-0 on Sunday in Cincinnati.

Lynn Biyendolo, Yazmeen Ryan and Alyssa Thompson also scored for the United States.
