Bay FC bolstered its roster for the second half of the NWSL season on Friday, signing Bay Area native Leah Freeman.
Freeman, who was a first-team All-American goalie at Berkeley High, will be available to play in the team’s Summer Series Friendlies, which begin today at 1:30 against Angel City at PayPal Park.
This is the first professional contract for the 23-year-old Freeman, who earned Pac-12 Goalie of the Year honors at Oregon in 2023 before transferring to Duke, where last season she was named the ACC Goalie of the Year. She was teammates with Bay FC midfielder Hannah Bebar at Duke, helping the Blue Devils to the 2024 NCAA College Cup semifinals.
Bay FC is tied for 10th in the NWSL with 15 points. They are 4-6-3, and with 13 regular-season games remaining are just three points out of eighth place.
Jordan Silkowitz has been Bay FC’s primary goalie, starting 11 NWSL games and making 33 saves while allowing 14 goals. Emmie Allen started the other two NWSL games, making four saves and allowing three goals.

The 49ers placed six players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list before training camp begins for veterans on Tuesday.
Wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk (knee surgery recovery) and Ricky Pearsall (hamstring), safety Malik Mustapha (knee), linebacker Curtis Robinson (knee), defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) and offensive lineman Andre Dillard (ankle) are on the 49ers’ PUP list.
Players, though, can be removed from the PUP list at any point during training camp, and it’s likely some will be back at practice at some point in the coming days.
Also, offensive lineman Ben Bartch and safety George Odum were both put on the Non-Football Injury list with unspecified conditions.
Lloyd Howell has resigned as executive director of the NFL Players Association after two years on the job, citing distractions his leadership has caused in recent weeks.
Howell has come under scrutiny since ESPN reported he has maintained a part-time consulting job with the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm that holds league approval to seek minority ownership in NFL franchises.
That followed the revelation that the NFLPA and the league had a confidentiality agreement to keep quiet an arbitrator’s ruling about possible collusion by owners over quarterback salaries.

Pelicans rookie Derik Queen is likely to miss at least the start of training camp after having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist.
Queen was hurt Tuesday while playing in an NBA Summer League game. The Pelicans said he would be evaluated again in approximately 12 weeks, which would be after camps have begun.
The 6-foot-9 Queen, the Big Ten freshman of the year after averaging 16.5 points for Maryland, was taken with the No. 13 pick in the draft by Atlanta and the Pelicans acquired his rights in a trade.
