Class 5A
No. 17 Grandview beat No. 16 Denver East, 17-3: The Angels (6-5) got a field goal in the opening quarter, but the Wolves defense pitched a shutout from there. Denver East’s defense also played well, but Caleb Llamas’ 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, then Will Reid’s field goal and Blitz McCarty’s TD run in the fourth quarter were the difference to set Grandview (6-5) up with a rematch against Centennial League rival Cherry Creek. The two teams played in the regular season finale. Next week: Grandview at No. 1 Cherry Creek (9-1), TBA.
No. 9 Erie beat No. 24 Overland, 48-6: Junior Braylon Toliver returned a punt for a touchdown the first time Erie touched the football, and quarterback Ronin Ward threw four TD passes and ran in another as the Tigers (9-2) took a 42-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Jarrius Ward’s long touchdown run in the third quarter allowed the 5A Metro South League champion Trailblazers (6-5) to avoid the shutout. Next week: Erie at No. 8 Pine Creek (7-3), TBA
No. 15 Fossil Ridge beat No. 18 Mullen, 49-7: Marcus Mozer got the Sabercats going with a three-yard rushing TD in the first quarter. Nick Kubat’s short TD pass Harley Schmidt extended the lead to 14-0 late in the first half. Dante Dupuch’s rushing TD for Mullen (4-7) made it a one-score game in the third quarter, but the Sabercats (7-4) responded with another Kubat-to-Schmidt TD connection to push the score to 20-7. By the time Kubat threw a third TD late in the third, the game was on ice. Next week: Fossil Ridge at No. 2 Mountain Vista (10-0), TBA
No. 10 Chatfield beat No. 23 Rock Canyon, 36-9: Chargers QB Cash Williams got the scoring going with an early TD pass to freshman sensation Rome Bell. Even after Rock Canyon (4-7) registered a safety late in the first quarter, Chatfield (8-3) was too much to handle for the Jaguars. Rushing TDs by Hunter Balderston and Jude Smith put Chatfield up 21-7 at half, then in the third quarter Jackson Autry’s interception set up another score on the ground, this time by Brock Narva. Rock Canyon didn’t find the end zone until Tyler Meyer broke off a 90-yard rushing TD early in the fourth. Next week: Chatfield at No. 7 Fairview (10-0), TBA
No. 11 Arapahoe beat No. 22 Douglas County, 49-34: The Warriors (8-3) went up 21-0 in the first quarter thanks to Andrew Smart’s TD catch, Tristan Rogers’ rushing TD and then a pick-six by Anthony Clouatre. That early deficit proved too much for the Huskies (5-6) to overcome, especially after Mitchell Price found Smart for another passing TD that made it 28-0 midway through the second quarter. Next week: Winner at No. 6 Legend (9-1), TBA
Class 4A
No. 10 Monarch beat No. 23 Bear Creek, 28-7: Senior QB Riley Montemayor ran for a pair of touchdowns and hooked up with Archie Jahn for another score to help Monarch (9-2) claim its first state playoff win in 11 years. Riley Wilson scored on a short TD plunge to pull Bear Creek (4-7) within a pair of touchdowns late in the third quarter, but the Coyotes defense came up with a pick-six not long after. Next week: Monarch at No. 7 Mesa Ridge (7-3), TBA
No. 19 Golden beat No. 14 Riverdale Ridge 17-14: Both defenses flexed in this one. Golden held a narrow 3-0 early in the fourth quarter, before the Ravens finally found the end zone to go up 7-3 with 11 minutes left. Riverdale Ridge (9-2) added another touchdown about three minutes later to extend the lead to 14-3, but a response TD by Golden (6-5) with six minutes left again made it a game. Golden then proceeded to score another TD with less than a minute to play to deny the Ravens their first playoff win in 4A. Next week: Golden at No. 3 Pueblo West (9-1), TBA
